Custom Itinerary: San Diego To Yellowstone By RV - My Family Travels
caption

Q. Darlene K. of Poway, California asks for recommended campgrounds to accommodate her 28-foot-long RV on the route between her home and Yellowstone.

A. Thank you for your inquiry about campgrounds along the route from San Diego in California to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming/Montana.

This 1,000-mile journey over 11 days with your teen will be a very exciting one, but we urge you to allow enough “down” time to see the sights. We can’t tell from your note if this is a one-way trip in the RV, but since they drive slowly and it’s not easy to cover so much ground, we hope for you that it is!

In general, we recommend the Jellystone Campgrounds, as they have great facilities for families. Their campgrounds typically have good pools and lots of organized activities for the kids.

Here is a link for their campground in California  They don’t have as many campgrounds out West, so you will need another resource. KOA is a well known chain, but we have heard from our families that the quality of their facilities is uneven so you don’t always get what you expect.

The best resource we have for locating campgrounds that meet the needs of your specific RV is the RV Association Directory.  They screen all members and make referrals based on that, and they have a comprehensive list as well as a site with many good tips.

You have asked for ideas about outdoor recreation, and the road is filled with opportunities, but first you will have to plan your evening stops so you can see how much time you have for recreation.

This road trip itinerary for Yellowstone should give you some ideas. Mt. Rushmore — since you only have 11 days to vacation — seems like one goal too many in our opinion.
