Teens play an influential role when it comes to family purchases and vacations are no exception, as Hilton has discovered. Gone are the nostalgic days of my childhood, when my brother and I were content to stay at any motor lodge or campsite our parents chose. A motel swimming pool was a big deal and the sundaes at Howard Johnson’s our favorite treat.
Kiss those days goodbye.
Today’s Savvy Young Yield Big Influence
Discerning 21st-century tweens and teens are saturated with information and have very strong opinions. We know that millennials and younger travelers have tremendous influence -- financially and socially -- over household spending. In a recent study performed by NFO WorldGroup, 74% of U.S. parents who made online purchases confirmed that their children participated in the process.
Vacations are no exception. HomeAway, a leading online vacation rental site, found that “kidfluencers” are a critical part of the family vacation planning process. In partnership with the independent market research firm YouGov, HomeAway surveyed more than 2,800 kids (ages 6-18) and parents in the U.S. and Europe and found that when it comes to family vacation planning, children have significant decision-making power and a strong point of view on where to go, what to do and who to bring.
The Hilton Concert Series
Enter Hilton. They wisely recognize the weight of teen influence and know that teens and music go together like milk and cookies. In 2015, Hilton partnered with Live Nation to bring Hilton HHonors members the Hilton Concert Series. Thanks to its success, 2016 will see Hilton properties around the globe featuring concerts by some of the music industry’s most buzz-worthy artists with mucho youth appeal.
Concerts include Grammy-nominated Elle King at the Diplomat Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton in Hollywood, Florida on April 8, country music sensation Kip Moore at Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Nashville Downtown on August 31 and Gary Clark JR at the Hilton Austin on October 28, to mention just a few.
In addition, Live Nation will curate once-in-a-lifetime artist connections, such as VIP experiences at Electric Daisy Carnivals, an exclusive album listening session with Goo Goo Dolls, a style session with Grammy-nominee Andra Day and meet'n'greets with various artists around the world.
Hilton HHonors members may redeem points to attend these live concerts and VIP experiences. I seldom redeem my hotel points. While I am very conscientious of my airline frequent flyer points, for some reason my hotel loyalty points go largely unused. If you’re anything like me, the concert series could prove to be a great way to use them.
Hilton San Diego Bayfront
My pop music-loving kids and I recently spent the weekend at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront for Hilton’s kick off 2016 concert, featuring Jason Derulo. This best-selling artist has the all-important cool factor among teens, so my facilitating the concert instantly upped my own cool mom quotient. Everything about the concert, including the bedtime-friendly 6:30 pm start time, seemed tailor-made for families. Here’s a look at our concert experience:
Before and after the performance, we swam in the hotel’s large saltwater pool, dined on farm-to-table at Velas Restaurant and enjoyed San Diego’s family attractions and the favorable climate. The property is conveniently situated a few minutes walk from Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres and the pedestrian-perfect Gaslamp Quarter, with its dozens of shops and eateries.
