A Culinary Revolution in Colonial Virginia

There was a time not long ago when a family visit to Colonial Williamsburg meant living a, shall we say…  dated lifestyle.  Many parents, especially those with tweens and teens who bore easily, pushed off a visit to Virginia’s Historic Triangle until their empty nester years.

That’s no longer necessary. Thanks to the surge in gastronomic tourism (71% of travelers surveyed in 2015 said their trips had a moderate or high food focus), many historic destinations are appealing to forward-looking visitors by upping their foodie game.

A weak economy drives families (and all travelers) to seek value-driven vacations, which now often means travel in one's own back yard, a “Staycation," a kind of travel that fosters a sense of community, lets people discover their own city, and saves money.

Travel in the Machine Age: Robots Join the Frontline Workforce

Since HAL and his offspring, C-3PO and R2-D2, first entered popular culture, humans have grown accustomed to the notion of benevolent robots being trained to serve them. Brightline’s Bright Idea Comes to Florida

In one of the best ideas we’ve heard in a long time, work is proceeding on Brightline, a high-speed rail line that will serve south Florida’s busy tourist corridor. Their motto -- “carefree and car-free” – sums up the vast potential for this train to succeed with business commuters and international tourists who prefer not to rent a car.

Envisioned to run a 235-mile route from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and, eventually, Orlando; Brightline will begin its intercity service between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in summer 2017.

Trends: Halal Travel, By and For Muslims

Travel by Muslims, whether or not they are actively religious or following Islamic social laws, is a market segment known as Halal Travel. (Halal means a code of dietary laws, similar to the kosher dietary rules followed by some Jews.)

The travel industry, particularly in the Middle East and Arab world, has long recognized that even non-religious travelers have cultural preferences that can be easily catered to while they travel.
