Service is the performance of any duties or work for another. One human being lending a hand to one in need. Someone once said “You cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do.” They mean, that any type of aid one can provide is all that is asked for in order to change the course of a person's life.

It was the summer of 2010 when my family and I decided to take a vacation and resort to our native homeland, India. On one particular day, we set out to pray at various temples in different regions. As noon approached, it was approximately one hundred and fifteen degrees outside. We entered the grounds of our second temple and all I saw were faces filled with confusion and hope turn toward us in desperation.

These faces affected me permanently. The thought of poverty did not strike me head-on until I saw my own people shiver under umbrellas, with frail hands out waiting for support. From that point on, I knew it was my responsibility to help out. While I walked around handing out everything I had on me, happiness clutched at my heart for I knew I was doing the right thing. The warm smiles they returned still remain within me, for I knew I made a difference to them.

Life opens up many opportunities where a person can assist another. That one difference can help change a person's perspective on life and/or give them another chance at it. Doing the world a favor, is also doing yourself a favor.
