My Trip to Durango, Mexico - My Family Travels
last day in dgo

It was the Year of 2009, and my parents decided that we were going to spend the holidays in Durango, Mexico. Making this decision meant we agreed to have fun all day, every day. On the way there we saw many beautiful cities. It wasn’t like we thought. Usually what comes to mind when one hears the word Mexico is an image of a old town with guys in sombreros and women in long puffy dresses, but Mexico is actually similar to the U.S.. We were not only amazed at how they had huge malls, but also at the fact that they had highways and beautiful hotels. Also besides the city life Mexico has going on, there was food stands everywhere! All the food we ate was delicious, even better then our grandmothers!

When we arrived at my grandmother Tita’s house, all the teenagers ran to the room we were staying at. The first thing we saw was the painting that had tormented us since we were little. Immediately we took it down and hid it in the closet. What was the painting? It was a painting of a little girl, but we saw how her eyes would follow us everywhere! It seems crazy but it was a tradition to put her away. After that scary moment we began to look around the house. It is a two story house, and the stairs have no handles. So when we go up, we walk rite next to the wall. My cousins go every year, but for me it was the first in ten years. So they knew where everything was. I love my grandmother Tita’s house, it is filled with memories. Pictures of all her children and grandchildren are hanged up on the walls. When we saw our baby pictures my cousin Karen began making fun of me, and I made fun of her. During our stay we also got to visit many members of our family. All my life I thought I had too much family with us in Arizona, when actually we were nothing compared to how many there is over there. The girls and I couldn’t think anyone was cute because he would turn out to be our cousin. We had lots of fun with our cousins, they know so many games that don’t have to do with technology.
Besides our daily routine of waking up, eating, going to the candy store at the corner, eating again, playing games with our neighbor Jesus, and all the other fun things, there was one night that stood out the most. It as Midnight and none us could sleep. So my parents came up with probably the best idea ever. They decided to take us to the center of the city. The center of the city has all the stores, and the best food stands and restaurants. That night was unforgettable, it was as if my pregnant mom and my really strict dad were young again. They bought all the cousins food, and junk food, they also took us to see the beautiful Christmas lights that were set up in the park. That night was great, and its one that we always bring up.
Going over there helped me learn more about the roots of my family. Seeing all those pictures, and meeting the rest of my family really helped me realize that I love my family. Ever since then I am proud to say where my family is from. I hope I can go again soon, hopefully not in ten years like the last time.
