The True Small Town - My Family Travels

Welcome to Jefferson, GA the picture perfect image of a small town.  Jefferson is a small town with a giant foot print in medical history; in 1846 Dr. Crawford W. Long discovered Anesthesia.  Many small neighborhood competitions, bonfires in the backyard, and many giant lightning bug hunts.

Most times the first question people ask when they want to visit a place is, “What do they do for fun?”  Remember the times where the simplest things caused excitement, things like hunting lightning bugs with mason jars at twilight. The backyard bonfires where anyone can go and any story can be told. When you’re young, and even when your parents told you not to, you still burned the end of sticks to write your name in the air with smoke.

What does a farmers market mean to you? Here it’s a road side vender after school with fresh peaches and roasted peanuts.   It’s not as much like a market then it’s the trading some tomatoes for corn.  It’s the neighborhood competitions to see who can grow the first tomato and win the flag; my neighbor always beats my Dad. I can personally tell you right now fresh peaches and apples have been and always will be better than store bought fruit.

There is one big park here in Jefferson. Hurricane Shoals.  It’s a park built around the shallow rushing river.  At Hurricane Shoals picnicking under the trees with friends and swimming in the river is a popular passtime.  You can also have group events and parties there.

Jefferson has one major signature.  As I said before in 1846 Dr. Crawford W. Long discovered the medicine Anesthesia.  It was a surgical aid for major surgeries to render the patient unconscious while the surgery was taking place.  In medical history Jefferson is a major landmark that many people who don’t understand what happened here may just over look us, but we won’t forget.   Also we cannot forget our nation’s history.  Jefferson has a World War Two monument to honor those from Jefferson who died serving our country during the war.  Jefferson is in the heart of the south so of course we have a monument for our confederate soldiers and their families.

When you visit people will be talking, teams will be practicing, the bands will be playing and fans will be watching and cheering.  There may be Friday night football games or a soccer game going on.  Come and join in the fun, we’ll all be there and everyone is welcome.

What is your picture of a perfect small town?  Is it a place that’s real, somewhere where everyone knows everybody?  We welcome you to Jefferson, Georgia where the food is fresh off the vine, company is always welcome, and every evening at twilight there are more lightning bugs to hunt.  Look for the smoke of a bonfire at night or at the neighborhood garden where everyone pitches in.  Here there is barely a difference between friends and family.
