Death on the Bridge of Life

Calm waters shift slowly on one side. Driven, velocious cars journey on the other. A living form of juxtaposition. I feel the shadows of those who marched on the Edmund Pettus Bridge beside me. Heads up, hands bound together as one, ready to voice their concern for undeniable rights. The calm waters mimic the nature of their protest. Peaceful, tranquil, harmonious--all synonyms for the simple demonstration of a yearning for the voting rights of American citizens.

Timeless Nonetheless

The black, bead-like eyes of hundreds of startled crabs seemed to twinkle as they caught the yellow glow streaming from my flashlight. Gazing at the myriad of colors stretching endlessly over the vast ocean before me, I am reminded why this spot is revered as the sunset capital of America.  Suddenly, a shrill, giggle-filled war cry pierced through the serene sound of the crashing waves, as five little girls charged after the creatures, with buckets in hand and pails brandished proudly.

I Come From the South

"Rivers and Roads" plays out loud on a big yellow school bus. I woke up that morning on a gym floor with 26 other teens from all over Kentucky. Now we are headed to Arc of Alabama to garden and clean and help out in anyway we can, but yesterday we worked at Books for Africa, Atlanta, and tomorrow… Who knows? Pillows are spread everywhere and among the snickers and whispers I hear a sharp "shhhh” as people try to sleep on this bus.

The Girl in Stripes

About two weeks ago, I had the privilege of going on my first, actual vacation. We were going on a road trip all the way to the Gulf of Mexico so my grandmother could see the ocean before she died. So, we packed up my family, all eight of us, including a toddler, and set out. It sounds amazing right? Anyone would be so excited to go and see more of the world. I was terrified. I haven’t worn shorts since I was a young child, I hadn’t worn a bathing suit since some boys made fun of me back in middle school, and I most certainly hadn’t worn any dresses since forever.

Touching, Seeing, Understanding

During the month of November, 2013, the junior class at the International School of Americas (ISA) visited a multitude of places throughout the deep south, including Birmingham, Alabama, a place some consider to be the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. As a student at ISA, I was able to leave the classroom and learn about this movement in a better light, instead of in the traditional, and boring, textbook/classroom setting.

Eleven Kids, a 93 Year Old, a Motor Home...What Could Go Wrong?

The summer of 2011, I traveled with my ten cousins, aunt, uncle, and 93 year old great-grandfather the 590 miles from Auburndale, Florida, to Trussville, Alabama in a moderately sized motor home. The first harbinger of danger manifested in the form of a trip to McDonald's. After our meal, my great-grandfather revved up the engine and...nothing. He had driven over the parking space into the bushes. Eventually, we arrived at my cousins' house (still in Florida) by 3 am.
The next day, we were back on the road.

Going To Gulf Shores, Alabama

Alabama's Gulf Shores promises the pleasures of a sand beach, watersports and fine golf, with the gracious ways, slower pace and lower prices of the Old South. And, while America's Gulf Coast is steadily picking itself up and dusting off its oil-spattered knees, it's important that family beach vacation seekers keep tabs on the state of the shoreline at Gulf Shores and elsewhere.

Forest, Farm, and Southern Charm: Why Hayden, Alabama Is the Best Southern Travel Destination You've Never Heard Of

Never heard of Hayden, Alabama? No surprises there. According to the 2010 U.S. census, Hayden had a population of 444 and no stoplights. Some of its attractions include two lovely Dollar General stores, an abundance of small churches, and a rather charming "Mom-n-Pop" general store called Logan's. In the way of dining, there is a trailer that has, incidentally, come to be under new ownership at least once a week due to a repeated string of management issues.
