Mt. Washington Cog Railway to Build Summit Hotel

At age 147, the only cog railway in America east of the Rocky Mountains is getting a makeover.

When it opened a few decades after the first railroads did, one of the most interesting technological innovations in America was The Mount Washington Cog Railway, which exists to ride today.

Smaller Moments

I have never walked through Roman Catacombs, gazed from above Niagara Falls, or even seen the Grand Canyon.  I cannot tell stories of how I trekked the Amazon, share how I navigated Tokyo, or preach on the beauty of Yellowstone.  Those destinations tend to create unreachable expectations.  In my summer trip of 2013 I learned that sweet surprises and little moments of unusual wonder, that defy expectations, are the greatest ways to shape a satisfying trip.  You do not realize it in the moment, but instances of laughter and amazement are far less ephemeral than the destination itself.

Road Trip USA: Leaf Peeking in New England

The beautiful nature, charming towns and friendly faces make Vermont and New Hampshire a perfect choice for a family road trip.

Vermont’s small size and sparsley-traveled roads make it super for a family driving trip, and October brings leaf peepers to view nature’s annual display of autumn colors. The northern part of Vermont is remote enough to never truly be crowded. Of course, you'll  need more than colorful leaves to keep the kids entertained, so I've suggested stops that provide a variety of more active pursuits.

Sweet Simplicity

Around a flickering flame, four young boys lounge leisurely poking the inferno before them with sticks. Cheerily conversing, a few adventurous ones draw the smoldering sticks close to their faces. Baking in the coals, the evening’s meal of baked potatoes gradually cooks. When I remember scenes—like the one above—from my camping trips to White Lake campground in N.H., a small smile always accompanies the memory. Peacefully nestled amongst the White Mountains, White Lake boasts something extraordinary: simplicity.

Timeless: A Cottage on Laurel Lake

Laughing. Smiling. Crying. Throwing family members off the dock. Swimming into the late hours of the night. Dazzling Fourth of July fireworks.  Hundreds of picturesque memories surround my lake house in the quaint town of Fitzwilliam New Hampshire. It is easy to remember the glistening lake, the roar of a boat’s engine, and the morning sun rising in the sky even after months away. The smell of smores, fresh of the grilling stick, are implanted in my memory, alongside the jokes asking how many you were planning on eating.

Sunset Hill House Is A Snowbound Oasis

New England is not an easy place to get to know in winter, but Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire is an island of light in snowbound seas. When the dark and the cold and the snow hold the land in a formidable grasp, and people disappear into their homes and cafes, Sunset Hill House, festooned with lights and sparsely placed globes, is a warm, welcoming, well-lighted place to stay. The kind of place a traveler is glad to get to.
