Path of Wind and Simple Days

Our feet, coated in grime and mountain mud, tread a path over the unsteady ground.  The trail we hiked was one of indeterminable quality: it was, in essence, the very perfection of hiking. Only vaguely considered a trail, it carried us straight to the mountain’s heart in the way of large boulders, cold caves and pines that embraced sky.  At times bathed in early morning rays and other times coated in the unearthly stillness of fog, we were privy to many forest secrets that tend to go unnoticed.

I Come From the South

"Rivers and Roads" plays out loud on a big yellow school bus. I woke up that morning on a gym floor with 26 other teens from all over Kentucky. Now we are headed to Arc of Alabama to garden and clean and help out in anyway we can, but yesterday we worked at Books for Africa, Atlanta, and tomorrow… Who knows? Pillows are spread everywhere and among the snickers and whispers I hear a sharp "shhhh” as people try to sleep on this bus.

Joy in the Journey

The old cliche “the joy is in the journey” is taken literally in the Smoky Mountains.  The real attractions there do not rest in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge; they do not reside in Ripley’s Believe-It-or-Not or the Dixie Stampede.  True, my family attempted to find happiness in those places in the past, but the joy of our travels derives from the day we set foot in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
