Make It the Summer of Love Not War

The Bay Area around San Francisco is partying all year to the tune of #SummerofLove50, the 50th anniversary celebration of the counterculture’s meteoric rise to prominence in 1967.

Uprooted in Gold

It was that night by the gas station when I felt it. A liquid, a lightness, kind of like the golden air over my shoulder as I sat on the curb. For a moment it was stretched out soft, carrying me with it. The van was parked to my left and Nevada plains lay to my right. The future was spellbound. I was here, and the possibilities were endless.

I’d forgotten what it felt like to be a little kid.

45 minute drive adventures

Traveling is a human’s fate. We were fated to travel. Being exposed to new places is the best dream yet. I would love to be paid to travel. There seems to be no other dream job. My family and I are limited to traveling.

Weekend Adventures with Kids Around the Bay Area

We love San Francisco’s Bay Area and the Monterey Peninsula and return often with our family to sample new hotels, restaurants and the ever-changing scene.  Fans who have been leery of attempting a vacation with the kids can rest assured that there are enough family-friendly hotels -- and activities -- to please even the pickiest young traveler or the moodiest teen.

Here are three of our favorite home-away-from-home hotels in central California and the weekend adventures we enjoyed there.

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

Of all things, I am happiest to have inherited my father's 'travel gene'. His tales of traversing the European continent with his own father instilled in me a powerful wanderlust, an ache, a passion, a need to connect with the historic cities, like Rome and Paris, that my father encountered, as well as with the places of modernity like Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Save Me, San Francisco

How did my family decide to travel to San Francisco in the summer of 2011?  Did we make a list of all the interesting places we wanted to see and discuss the numerous possibilities?  No, it was because we couldn't seem to get Train's song, "Save Me, San Francisco," out of our heads for about a month.  Is that a silly reason to travel someplace?  Of course.  But it turned out to be one of the best vacations we've ever had.

Almost Ireland

“Hello?" "Hi Honey, come straight home from school with Sajina. They won't let Grandpa on the plane..." Her voice tapered off.
