The Power of People: Helping Rebuild in the Birthplace of Jazz

Pulling apart a roof is not as simple as it sounds. As I pried the warped and rotting shingles away from a house damaged by Katrina, I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I had never experienced in my life. There I was in the birthplace of jazz, working with Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, reconstructing homes and the community. As I took in the cacophonous sounds of nails and boards, I thought about how I ended up there. I traveled with the National Federation of Temple Youth, an organization that brings teens together from all over the country.

A Walk Alone in America's Most Unique City

Hard as I tried, I could not do it. As I closed my eyes and tried to imagine just how enormous the river really was, my brain failed to comprehend the sheer magnitude and raw size of the Mississippi. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water flowed past me every second, carrying with them over 109 species of fish and hundreds of boats loaded with cargo. With my face pressed against the 10th floor window of the Hyatt, I gawked at the river all day.

It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Swing

It hits you on the head. Strikes your eyes, moves your feet and swings your mind. Rhythmically always on the move, the notes never seem to stop. The sun shines, relaxing itself upon the Mississippi and its flowing current. Splashing against the street - the worn out soles of tourists curious shoes. Grasping each colorful step, the sights seem restless between sharp shades of red and soft yellows on building fronts. Terraces full of people, full of smiles and those wonderful jokes and stories.
