Neredesen, Margaret...Where are you?

Life as an exchange student opens up doors to many curiousities. During my summer in Istanbul, Turkey on a full government scholarship for Turkish language study, I did a lot of thinking about the location of my new home.

Lost and Found: Yosemite

I’m flat on my stomach flying at 9,000 feet, legs tight and arms stretched wide. My neck and head are over the edge, and the wind is heavy when you’re up this high. Provocative thoughts are coming and going, like the oddly hilarious Native American goddess whose breath is sweeping the sweat from my forehead.

We Share the Same Blood

Echad, shtayim, shalosh, arba…”
The foreign sounds of counting came from the deck of a dhow, a traditional Arab sailboat, cruising through a harbor filled with open sky, twinkling city lights, and water glistening with oil.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself on the third night of my seventeenth Passover drifting lazily around the Persian Gulf near Doha, Qatar. This, in addition to becoming the inadvertent Hebrew teacher to a duo of Qatari girls.

Traveling alone without speaking the local language is no simple task.  Why, then, do I continue to do it? This was a question I was asking myself two winters ago when I was traveling alone to Mongolia. Actually, something always seems to go wrong on my trips and something did go wrong on this one. Believe it or not, I forgot to bring my bank card and thus was limited to the cash in my pocket to get me to Ulaan Baatar (the capital of Mongolia) from Beijing.

Tzedakah in India

Every afternoon, sixteen-year-old Salim came home from school, through the doors of the Nav Jagriti or the “New Hope” orphanage and shook my hand. He asked me: “You are feeling?” to which I said, “Good, very good, thank you. How are you feeling?” Salim smiled and struggled to respond to my reply in English, sometimes answering, “I am no feeling”, “I am fine, thank you” or "Hungry.

Nigeria

My name is Chigozilim Udonna Menakaya and I am a Nigerian-American. Whenever I tell somebody this, they’re always like, “please, there's no such thing as a Nigerian-American. Either you’re Nigerian or you’re American”. It’s funny because five years ago, I didn’t know that it existed either.
