The summer of 2009 my family plus my brother’s girlfriend decided to go to Lake Havasu, Arizona and camp at Crazyhorse Campgrounds. My aunt and uncle, which live in Arizona, chose to come visit us since Lake Havasu was a two hour drive from where they lived. We were all resting at the campground until my dad had a crazy idea to take the boat down the river to see the amazing rocks and to eat off shore. The boat’s capacity is seven people and we were carrying eight people on the boat. It was my mom, dad, sister, brother, brother’s girlfriend, aunt, uncle, and myself. I get real scared if rules like that get broken, but my dad, being a Mexican, didn’t care. We took sandwiches, sodas, our three dogs onboard which added more weight so I got more nervous. We reached the river and were amazed by the big rocks along the river. We reached a spot where there was sand and for us to eat our sandwiches. We’d stay there as clouds passed by, but it was still hot. My mom told us that there was a storm coming, but none of us believed her. The waves started getting bigger and we didn’t see many boats pass by anymore, so we decided to leave and go back to the campground. As we went back into the lake area we all felt like dipping in the deep fresh water. We gave my aunt and uncle a life jacket as they went in first. My sister, brother, his girlfriend, and I went in next without life jackets. We were swimming for a while and then my parents came in with no life jacket. The boat had no one in it but the three dogs. My dad went in the boat and got a pad-like pillow that could float on water because he was getting a bit tired. He went back in the water and we noticed the weather was getting bad. The waves were getting bigger and we all raced towards the boat, but only my mom could get on the boat and went in the boat. She didn’t notice that as she turned around to help us we were far away from the boat. The worst part was that she didn’t know how to turn on the boat and she panicked. This storm came in real fast. I was scared for my sister because she was swimming towards the boat with no life jacket. I went after her, but my dad was screaming my name to come back and get a hold of him because he had the float. My brother grabbed a hold of my aunt with her life jacket and my brother’s girlfriend was crying hard as she grabbed my uncle with his life jacket. The waves were crashing onto us hard and as I was trying to get my sister I thought I was going to die. I got a hold of her and we both swam back towards my dad. We were all together panicking of what to do. We looked at my mom from a far view and she didn’t know what to do. We saw a boat pass by and we screamed, but they didn’t hear us. Luckily another boat passed by and saved us all. They helped us go back to our boat and we returned safely to the dock. We always look back at this as a joke and tease my mom. We tell her how maybe the next day the newspaper will say, “Family members’ dead, except mom”.
