Tiger Hunters

The rustic orange color of mud had completely taken over my black converse high-tops, my hands, and my knees by the time we got through the dense forest. The mud combined with the water flowing from a small rift in the surrounding rock turned that path into a slippery slide of mud, water, and possibly animal dung. Breaking through the forestry, we began to see the old wooden houses that the people of the Lahu village continued to live in today.

Dust Motes

The dust motes. They floated with the ambience of rolling hills. A suspended colloid, only visible with a shaft of early morning sunlight piercing through the window of the electric bus, making those dust motes shiver and dance. At eighty-six years old, my grandfather watched the new skyscrapers in Tianjin and the crammed-in stands selling red bean rolls blur past, focusing on the nearly invisible flakes.

A Window Into Her Past

After Nicaragua, I was continually awaiting my next opportunity to travel the globe. So, it was obviously a no-brainer when my parents asked me to accompany them on their second trip to China, just shy of my 15th birthday. On my parents’ first trip, they brought home a new little sister for me and my two younger brothers. Now, they were going back to welcome a little boy into our family!

China's Treasure

I’m here. Ancient stones are only steps away from my touch. I see a high point in the glorious distance and make it my goal to at least make it there. I take my first step and just admire the wall itself. This wall is man-made, a group of people spent their time putting lopsided stones together to protect their country from invasion.

China in Transit

Hangzhou, China is beautiful in the spring. The weather is lovely, the trees are in bloom, and if you look above the buildings, the sky is even blue. On the west lies a long, gleaming lake; on the east sit a set of low mountains. Every inch in-between is stuffed, all high rise buildings and cars throwing up a ruckus of honking and trees, crammed into the cracks. Busy, hi-tech, constructed in the last twenty years, Hangzhou is truly a twenty-first century city.
