When did this crazy long 127 Yard Sale begin?
It started a generation ago with Mike Walker, a former Fentress County Executive from Jamestown, Tennessee. He launched the first one in 1987 to encourage travelers to bypass interstates like I-40 and I-75. He wanted motorists to slow down and enjoy Tennessee’s local, more scenic routes.
Thursday to Sunday, August 6-9, 2026, will be the 40th consecutive year of what’s been dubbed the “World’s Longest Yard Sale.” You can still visit Jamestown, Tennessee, the heart of Big South Fork Country, where the Sale originated, and buy a commemorative T-shirt.
Where can I find the world’s biggest flea market?
This summer, for some wallet-friendly, unexpected family vacation fun, try the Route 127 Corridor Yard Sale. Myriad vendors (some may be your neighbors!) line US Highway 127 as it meanders through six states: Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. The four-day sale now extends for 690 miles.
If you can’t make it in August, try for next May when Indiana’s famous US 40 Yard Sale, another extensive flea market, gets underway.
What are they selling at the Route 127 Yard Sale?
Vendors range from professional antique dealers operating out of established storefronts to artisans and craftsmen who set up booths and rolling displays along the road. Expect to find vintage Hall butter dishes that came with your great grandma’s refrigerator. Look for original Pokémon cards and chipped Chinese vases made into lamps. Score big with classic metal lunchboxes decorated with superheroes. There are literally thousands of things looking for the right buyer.
New for 2026 is the official 127 Yard Sale merchandise collection. The exclusive event T-shirt features the complete route through all six states, along with fun facts. Fans purchase tote bags, mugs, and more online after they return home with treasures.
How many people will be selling their stuff on Highway 127?

Major vendor stops (minimum of 25 vendors) host sellers from outside the region, resellers and antiques / collectible dealers. You never know where a bargain lies. Stop and browse even cheaper merchandise from locals without a driveway to sell from.
Ask passengers and the restless backseat to keep their eyes open for countless additional roadside sales. There are gems hidden in thousands of displays done by counties, churches, schools and yard sellers.
Why shop at a 690-mile thrift shop sale?

Michigan to Ohio to Kentucky shopping trip ideas
Begin your hunt for the perfect bargain outside Detroit, Michigan. Shop for a few hours then settle down in Dayton, Ohio, a good overnight stop. My family loves the U.S. Air Force Museum and its collection of air and spacecraft that dwarf the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
You’ll find bargain-priced, family-size rooms at the Residence Inn Dayton North, where one-bedroom king suites have a full kitchen, dining area and pullout queen sofabed. It’s pet-friendly, too, with an indoor swimming pool, guest laundry room, all-night snack shop and a free breakfast buffet.
From there, it’s a half-day of driving and a half-day of shopping if you head to the perimeter hotels around Lexington or lodgings near Louisville, Kentucky. Both cities have a lot of family attractions plus budget motels with pools along the highways.
Do the kids have stamina? If so, put in a long, long day of searching for old Hot Wheels models, tin toys, ball caps, Fiestaware, and continue south to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chattanooga is only an hour from Pikeville, a hotbed of Major Vendors and ordinary citizen sellers.
