My eyes needed a second to adjust when I came in from the sunlight, and then the room simply opened up. The powerhouse was built in 1907 to generate electricity for an entire lead-mining operation, and the ceiling still soars the way it did when generators filled the floor.

Now the space holds a museum, and the first gallery is packed with underground mining equipment. The centerpiece is impossible to miss.

A 15-ton electric trolley locomotive sits right there on display, squat and heavy, built to run on rails through tunnels hundreds of feet below the surface. Workers sometimes called machines like this an electric mule, since they took over the job that real mules and men once did, dragging loaded ore cars through the dark.

I walked a slow circle around it, reading the interpretive signs and trying to picture the noise. Metal on rock, wheels squealing, headlamps cutting through dust.

What struck me most was the scale mismatch. A machine this size had to move through tunnels barely bigger than itself, guided by miners who knew every curve by memory.

The building itself deserves attention too. Look up at the tall windows, the brick walls, the industrial bones that survived long after the last shift ended.

Not everything in the equipment gallery came out of a catalog. A few pieces were designed specifically for the strange conditions of the Old Lead Belt mines, and that makes them genuinely rare.

The St. Joe Shovel caught my attention right away. It is a mechanical loader riding on crawler tracks, engineered by the St. Joseph Lead Company for its own underground workings, and only 52 were ever built.

The first one appeared around 1922.

Seeing something that limited in production, sitting a few feet away rather than behind glass in a big-city museum, felt like a small privilege.

Nearby sits a speeder, which is a compact man-carrier used to move workers underground quickly. Compared to the locomotive it looks almost toy-sized, but it solved a real problem in mines where a shift could start a long ride away from the shaft.

I liked comparing the two. One machine was about brute hauling power, the other about saving human minutes in a place where time underground cost money.

The staff here made a difference for me. Ask a question about any of these machines and you will usually get a detailed answer, often with a detail the signage does not cover.

Kids tend to gravitate toward the biggest wheels and levers, and there are interactive elements scattered through the museum to hold their interest. Bring a phone or camera, because the odd angles and worn paint photograph surprisingly well indoors.

Outside, the mood shifts completely. The museum is orderly and lit; the mill complex around it is raw, rusted, and slowly losing an argument with the weather.

Federal Mill No. 3 was once the largest mine-mill complex in the Old Lead Belt, a district that at its peak produced close to 80 percent of the nation’s mined lead. The mill was built by the Federal Lead Co. in 1906 and 1907, later acquired by St. Joseph Lead Company in 1923, and it kept running until 1972.

Eighteen buildings still stand on the site in various states of decay. You cannot go inside them, and honestly that rule makes sense once you look at the sagging steel and crumbling concrete up close.

Walking the exterior is still worth every step. I followed the line of old conveyor supports with my eyes, tracing where tons of ore would have traveled from crusher to mill to railcar.

The quiet is the part that gets you. A place engineered for constant grinding noise now sits still enough to hear birds in the framework.

St. Joseph Lead Company donated the property to the state in 1975, which is why any of it survives at all.

Wear closed shoes, since the ground is gravel and uneven in spots. Weather matters here more than at most museums, so check the forecast before planning a long outdoor wander.

Here is the part nobody warned me about. Tucked into the powerhouse museum is a mineral collection so good it would hold its own against dedicated rock museums in much larger cities.

Cases hold specimens from Missouri and from around the world, arranged systematically so you can actually follow what you are looking at. There is galena, the state mineral and the very lead ore that built this district, plus mozarkite, Missouri’s state rock.

Drusy quartz, Missouri lace agate, bladed barite, limonite, and geodes fill out the shelves, each one labeled with where it came from.

Then there is the fluorescent mineral display, which flips ordinary gray rocks into blazing pinks, greens, and blues under ultraviolet light. I stood in front of it longer than I expected, and I am not usually the person who lingers at rock cases.

The backbone of the collection traces back to Fayette P. Graves, a local mining company executive who started collecting in 1866 and eventually gathered roughly 3,000 specimens.

Families seem to love this gallery most. Kids who lose interest in machinery snap right back to attention when something starts glowing.

My practical tip: save the fluorescent case for last so your eyes have a moment in the dark. And read a few labels rather than all of them, or you will still be standing there at closing time.

Machines are impressive, but the photographs are what stayed with me on the drive home. Rows of historic images line the interpretive area, showing miners in work clothes, families outside company houses, and towns that existed because of what came out of the ground.

Lead mining in southeastern Missouri stretches back to the early 1700s, meaning this region carries close to 300 years of the industry in its soil. Large-scale operations arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and thousands of workers came with them.

Immigrant communities settled here for those jobs, and the exhibits give real space to their role in making the district run.

A small theater plays a 12-minute film covering historic underground mining and the ore milling process. I sat through the whole thing and found it clarified a lot about how the equipment outside actually fit together.

Younger kids may not last the full run time, and that is fine. The gallery has enough to look at that you can split up and regroup.

Reading about the mining process step by step, from breaking ore loose to grinding and separating it, changed how I saw the ruins outside. Suddenly the conveyor supports had a purpose rather than just a shape.

This section is the emotional counterweight to all the steel. The Old Lead Belt was a workplace first, and the exhibits never let you forget the people who clocked in.

Late afternoon turned out to be my favorite time on the grounds. The site covers just under 65 acres, and short, easy walking paths let you follow the landscape that mining reshaped over more than a century.

Interpretive signs along the way explain what you are seeing, including old mine features and tailings. The trails are well kept and gentle enough for families or a casual stroll after the museum.

Light does something wonderful to the rusted framework near sunset, turning the whole complex warm and slightly unreal.

Some numbers still amaze me. Beneath this region lie more than 1,000 miles of abandoned multilevel tunnels and roughly 300 miles of underground mainline railroad track, now naturally flooded with groundwater that helps supply Park Hills and nearby communities.

Practical details worth knowing: the site is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and hours can shift seasonally, so a quick call to 573-431-6226 saves disappointment. Parking is gravel and plentiful.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for outdoor exploring, with mild air and better visibility through the vegetation.

Special events add another reason to time your trip, including the Missouri Mines Rock Swap in early June, the Old Mine Open House in mid-September, and Fall Rocks in October.
