Not only have I lived in Austin, TX my whole life, but it's my favorite city in the whole world. Every corner you turn, there are tons of people that just want to have fun. Whether you live in Austin or are just visiting, the city is filled with all kinds of different and fun things to do, and it never gets old. The infamous saying, "Keep Austin Weird", comes from the selection of weird, unique people that make up its city. However, everyone always has a smile on their face, creating a sense of community.
A place where anyone that comes to Austin, TX must go, is "The Broken Spoke". It's the best honkey tonk around! There's plenty of food, drinks, and country dancing. The Broken Spoke has been apart of Austin since 1964, and has had famous country singers perform from Willie Nelson, to George Straight. And if you don't know how to country dance, they offer lessons, and it's all just to let lose and have a good time. The Broken Spoke is the last of the few true country dancing places in Austin, which is what makes it so unique, and definitely something everyone should try!
Another really neat place to take your family while visiting Austin, is the "Bob Bullock Museum". It's full of fun and interesting ways to learn about Texas' history. Inside, they have an IMAX theatre where, with the help of 3D glasses, history becomes reality. With a gift shop, different floors, and different hands-on activities, the Bob Bullock Museum is the place to go, where learning History is fun.
While you're visiting Austin, TX, try going to a place called, "Iron Works BBQ". It's located in downtown Austin, (on Red River Street), and is known for its delicious Texas-style barbecue. Austin's barbecue is something everyone must try while visiting the Lone Star State!
Something else that is interesting about Austin is ACL, (Austin City Limits). It's a live television music program, recorded and broadcasted on PBS stations. People from all over come to hear good live music and have a great time!
Downtown, under the Congress Avenue bridge, there are about 750,000 Mexican free-tailed bats. Each evening as the sun sets, the bats take off in a group looking for insects. These bats stay under the Congress bridge until October, (when they head back south). As a group, people like to go to grassy areas around the bridge, with some snacks and a good show. It's a fun experience for everyone to watch and enjoy. Austin is especially proud of this, since this is the largest urban bat colony in North America.
When the Austin Rodeo comes to town, it's always a load of fun! There's a variety of things to do. The rodeo involves all different types of age groups. For the kids, there's a carnival that has all sorts of rides, as well as cotton candy and other treats. There's also a petting zoo, where you can feed goats and other animals. Inside the rodeo, small shops sell hand made jewelry, bags, and other goods. There's always something for everyone to do!
I would highly recommend traveling all over the United States. Learning about, and seeing different cultures is a great experience. But most of all, I would recommend traveling to Austin, Texas. The options of different things to do is never limited!
