Welcome to Houston, Pennsylvania! We hope you will enjoy your visit here!
Houston is a small town located in South-Western Pennsylvania, about 25 miles west of Pittsburgh. Although we only have two stoplights in town, there are quite a few things to do in the area, and a fall festival in October. Make sure to visit during October for the infamous Pumpkin festival. But if you find yourself passing by on the Fourth of July, make the short drive to Canonsburg for the second largest parade in the state of Pennsylvania, drawing more than 50,000 spectators! Don't forget your sunscreen! While in Canonsburg, don't pass up the opportunity to get some ice cream or chocolate at Sarris Candies, a family run candy shop just 3 miles from the center of Houston.
Lodging: There are many places to stay that are not far from the center of town. Newly built or refurbished, there are a variety of lodging experiences for any budget. The Doubletree by Hilton, Hampton Inn and Suites, and Cambria Suites are some of the local favorites. These three hotels are located in the Valley between The Meadows Racetrack and Casino, and Tanger Outlets. http://www.cambriasuites.com http://www.hilton.com/search/1/us/ca/pittsburg/0/0/0/0/0/0/50?wt.srch=1
Dining: There are many delicious restaurants in and around Houston. Jimmy Z's Pizza is a local favorite, with the square slices that "don't cut corners".
Beechie's Place in nearby Meadowlands is a hotspot after Friday night football games, with the home-made comfort food, and the family friendly atmosphere since 1952. http://www.beechiesplace.com/
Mr. Big's is a new addition to the area, serving up appetizers and entrees, as well as being the most popular sports bar in town. http://www.mrbigssportsgrill.com/
Entertainment: A great place to have fun if you are over twenty-one is The Meadows Racetrack and Casino. A newly built casino and seats to watch the horse races is featured there, with concerts throughout the summer. Mom and Dad, don't worry about your kids! There is a bowling alley downstairs that offers glow in the dark "Cosmic Bowling" on Friday nights, and regular bowling during the rest of the week.
If you find yourself visiting Houston during the second weekend of October, you will find yourself in the middle of the Houston Pumpkin Festival! With craft and food vendors all day Friday and Saturday, a kickoff concert by the Chartiers-Houston Marching band on Friday morning, and a Parade through the center of town on Saturday, once again with the marching band and the Homecoming court, there is something for everyone!
There is also a Bowling alley on the border of Houston and Canonsburg called West Pike Bowl.. good food and fun times!
Shopping: Sitting on top of one of the local hills, to be seen from any other hill around, is Tanger Outlets. With over 60 different stores, from clothes, to shoes, to food, and even toys, there is something there for everyone. With open walkways, it is sensitive to the weather on that hill! Make sure to dress warm if you are visiting after September, the wind up there is killer! http://www.tangeroutlet.com/pittsburgh
