Quaint and Fierce: Burke, Virginia - My Family Travels
IMAG0264

Burke is a small little suburban town in Virginia, full of peaceful scenery, and a loving community. While it’s not the ideal picturesque town that would be used for a painting on the surface, it still is absolutely lovely. The town is also a lively place, bustling with massive school events, and community festivities. Burke itself is not a well-known historical site, it is however a springboard too well-known places like Gettysburg and D.C., due to its proximity.

On the outside looking into Burke you would see rows of houses, grocery stores, and fast food restaurants… but within its woodland walls you can get away from basicvile, and turn your head towards a calming stroll through the woods. Nature is just a few steps away and you are engulfed into serenity, birds chirping high in the trees, the leaves rustling in the wind, and the therapeutic sound of water moving through the creek. It is extremely easy to let yourself go in the green paradise within burke, just take it all in with a big breath of fresh air. The woods are dense, and close to nature… the ponds and burke lake are also calming and close to nature. You could take a stroll around Burke Lake, or feed the geese there.

Taking bike rides, and walks in the woods is a pastime of the local children, but there are many other things to do in burke. During the school year these children are hard at work in school, or doing things for their school. Football games bring massive crowds, all the students cheering in unison. Or the art shows, if loud cheering isn’t your thing; Robinson Secondary School, for instance, has a yearly art show that presents the amazing artwork of their students, as well as the neighboring elementary schools. The art show bring the community closer, some students have a booth full of their works where they talk to passerby’s, and sell their pieces. The art of the students isn’t the only art shown yearly in burke, because burke has its own annual festival.

The Burke Festival brings in locals with unique clothing, pottery, jewelry, and art work for sale. The festival has rows and rows are local sellers, and artisans. My personal favorite is the spray painter, who creates works like a wolf in moonlight out of spray paint. The festival also has loads of activities like rock climbing, and face painting for the children. Too finish it off there is food from local vendors at the festival too curb your appetite.

Finally, burke is in close proximity too Historical places like Washington D.C., the Capital of the United State of America. It’s just 18~ miles away from Burke. People from burke often take a train up to D.C. just to visit it for a daytrip, like to see the cherry blossom festival.

That’s burke, a quaint and calm, yet lively community.
