Q – Joni R. of Leawood, Kansas writes: I am writing to see if you have any feedback on Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont. I am planning a family reunion with my cousins for about 35 adults and 20 children next year. Any information or feedback you can provide would be wonderful. Joni also commented: “We like the idea of Smuggs’ wonderful childrens’ programs, as well as the multitude of lodging options, all with complete kitchens to allow for some meals to take place at home. I called for pricing today and it all seems pretty reasonable. Also…there are several different communities from which to select your condo (Village West, Village East, North Hill, West Hill, Highlands Hill). Do you have any information on which might be “best”? A – We spoke with our contact Barbara Thomke of Smugglers’ Notch and she offers some suggestions and personal insights for you. First, she thinks that you would be best served by visiting the reunion area of their website at: Smuggs Reunions where you can read about the various reunion packages and options, and even ask for a quote. Additionally, she suggests that you call Andrew Goldman, a group vacation specialist, at 800/521-0536. Since there will be 35 adults and 20 kids of various ages, Andrew could recommend lodging options and configurations that take into account the family’s needs!

And, here are Ms. Thomke’s personal favorites: West Hill and North Hill. They both have community centers with pools and would be a great place to hang around as a group. If there are any folks included who are not able to walk any distance, then she would recommend Village East or Village West, as these (really the central village) are closest to the major activity centers such as tennis, golf, restaurants, and evening family events and entertainment. All the Villages are connected by a free on-call shuttle service.

Smuggs is located just 45 minutes from the Burlington International Airport and can also arrange transfers. July is a wonderful time to visit Vermont and since Smuggs’ is nestled directly in the Green Mountain chain with the mountains all around, she thinks your family would have a wonderful time and experience quintessential Vermont. Plan to stay over a Thursday night for sure, as that is the night of the Vermont Country Fair, which she promises is really a fun event offering live music, pony rides, a Midway filled with games, family games such as water balloon toss and sack races, a tricycle race, vendors selling Vermont crafts and so on.

The hikes are also very popular and there are more than 15 different ones – so everyone could get out and see Vermont up close. As you can see, there are just tons of opportunities for a large family to recreate and have fun at Smuggs and she hopes that you will visit.

Feel free to check out FTF for our stories on “Smugglers’ Notch.”  For our part, we feel that they are great at Smugg’s – they don’t call it “America’s Family Resort” for nothing!
