Just outside Zion National Park is a new hotel with family suites, shuttle bus access to the park and its own movie theater for after-hiking fun.

A new hotel recently opened in Springdale, Utah, just outside the entrance to Zion National Park. Cable Mountain Lodge enjoys a location every bit as stunning as the National Park Service's venerable Zion Lodge, located inside of the park, and rates for family suites that are comparably good value.

Why would a family choose to stay at Cable Mountain Lodge?  Room size is a big plus in this 50-room lodge.  Our room was huge, and included a full kitchen (bigger than the one in my New York City apartment), living room with a fold-out couch, a large separate bedroom and a scenic terrace.  This spacious configuration allowed both kids and parents to enjoy a bit of privacy. The two flat screen televisions were a nice touch.

We were able to save money by cooking breakfast and preparing our brown bag lunches in the well-equipped kitchen.  In addition to being gigantic, our room was spotless.  The free high-speed internet did not go un-appreciated.

The lodge’s grounds are peaceful and immaculate, fitting for a place of such supreme natural beauty.  The outdoor pool is heated, and offers stunning views of the breathtaking landscape that Zion is famous for. The spectacular cream, pink and red sandstone cliffs that are unique to this area are visible from every room of the Cable Mountain Lodge.

The hotel is home to the Zion Canyon Movie Theatre, which has six giant screens, one in 3D.  Hotel guests get a 50% discount on ticket prices.  This clinched the deal for my movie-crazed kids.

Getting Out to Explore Zion

Our days were spent enjoying the natural beauty that is Zion.  We hiked to the Lower Emerald Pools, an easy one-hour long trail that brought us to a refreshing waterfall.

We enjoyed our Canyon Trail Ride, a guided ride on friendly horses. We participated in several family-oriented nature programs that the park rangers offer, free of charge.  In the evening, my kids were happy to return to civilization, complete with 3D glasses and time to communicate with their friends on Facebook.

Cable Mountain Lodge is, simply, a great addition to the area’s existing accommodations.

If you have not visited Zion National Park, it is a must-see to put at the top of your list.  It is truly magnificent to behold, and offers wonderful nature programs, hikes and other family-oriented activities.  If you have already visited, you know it is diverse and offers something for everyone.  You could visit dozens of times and still find a new trail to hike, wildflower to photograph or Ranger-led walk to participate in.  The rainbow-colored rock formations are a visual feast that your eyes will never tire of.
