Congratulations to the February 2010 Punzabo winner, Nathan Fox, author of  “A Very Volunteer Vacation”! On his trip, Nathan didn’t discover an exotic locale or visit international monuments in far away lands; he did however, learn a great deal about helping others.  He and a group of teenagers from all over the country were strangers when they visited Sullivan, Illinois.  However, after a few days of volunteer work, they became very close and made a difference in an old widow’s life.

Originally from Milwaukee Wisconsin, Nathan moved at the age of one and grew up in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.  Of his hometown, he says, “I love the Falls; the sports are great here, along with the people.  It has been a great place to grow up.”

Currently 18 years old, Nathan is a senior at Menomonee Falls high school.  An ambitious student, he is enrolled in many rigorous courses, most of which are at the Honors or College Level.  Some of Nathan’s most difficult classes include: physics, accounting, Spanish, economics, and pre calculus.  Of his time in high school, Nathan shares, “I have really enjoyed my high school experience. I love attending all sporting events, partying and hanging out with friends.”

Nathan plans to attend one of two colleges next Fall.  He is weighing his options between UW-Whitewater or UW- Washington County.  Although, he is still not sure which school is for him, he is certain that he wants to student elementary education so he will one day become a teacher.

A hard worker, Nathan has numerous jobs.  He works at Walgreens, mows all of the neighborhood lawns and during the summer he is a caddie at a local golf course.  One of his main priorities is saving up money for college and Nathan plans to use his winnings from the Punzabo to add to his collection.

On winning the award, Nathan explains, “I am thankful for the award which will be put towards my college education and I hope after others read this they will want to volunteer their time to communities in need.”

Although he has not had the opportunity to travel recently, he keeps busy between school and his jobs.  Also, he is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been studying martial arts for the past 13 years.

As Nathan found out, anyone can be the next winner of the BIGO community’s monthly Punzabo award because they’re picked by you. Be sure to skim over the Punzabo Award Rules for Travel Journals and start reading up, rating your favorites and ask friends and family to rate too. Happy travels and good luck!
