Nobel Peace Prize Received by Empty Chair - My Family Travels

Israeli singer Idan Raichel performed with American soul singer India.Arie at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert held December 11th in Oslo, Norway.

The two artists performed “Gift of Acceptance” from their collaborative album titled Open Door.

Unfortunately, the same Open Door policy was not extended to the recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Winner Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese intellectual who has fought for democracy since the student protests at Tian An Men Square, is imprisoned in China and could not attend.

Due to the Chinese government’s prohibition on travel by his relatives, this was the first time since 1936 that no family member or designated recipient was at the event.

Instead, Liu’s empty chair, and his words read by actress Liv Ullman, were a far more potent symbol of how necessary his work on improving human rights for all Chinese continues to be.
