Blacktip Reef Sharks are Baltimore, Maryland's Latest Family Attraction - My Family Travels
Blacktip Reef Render 2

This summer, July 10th marks the opening of the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s latest exhibit, Blacktip Reef. Visitors will be able to get face-to-face with sleek and speedy blacktip reef sharks.

Throw in 15 other major marine life species, 60 additional varieties of fish and Calypso, a 500-pound green sea turtle and you’ve got the makings for one integrated, self-contained 260,000-gallon coral reef ecosystem. And that adds up to the centerpiece of a weekend family vacation in Maryland with fun and learning thrown in.

National Aquarium designed for All Ages & Physical Abilities

It will be easy to see all the aquatic action clearly, thanks to a 27-foot viewing window that curves four feet into the underwater reef itself.

On the upper level, visitors will be able to look down onto the reef from viewing platforms, while the entire exhibit can be seen on three sides.

Daily diver presentations and feedings by staff provide ample opportunities for curious kids to ask the experts any questions they might have about marine life.  It is as close as you can get to experiencing an environment of sharks and an endangered coral ecosystem without getting wet.

Baltimore is a Great Place for Families

With its 1.4 million annual visitors, the National Aquarium is already a top Baltimore attraction. Baltimore is loaded with more family-perfect attractions for kids of all agesc and a wide variety of hotels in every price range. Check out the Visit Baltimore tourism site for current vacation packages.

Baltimore is easy to reach from many East Coast cities. Leave the car at home.  You can ride Amtrak into town or travel on one of the numerous discount buses that venture here. Once you’ve arrived, the Charm City Circulator network of buses will get you anywhere you want to go. They are fast, efficient and best of all, free.

Get there green, and your family will appreciate even more the aquarium’s already strong commitment to inspire conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures.
