Nestled against the Ohio River, Louisville Kentucky seems to only be known for two things: Baseball bats and the Kentucky Derby. While both of these aspects of the city are certainly enjoyable, Louisville is thriving with new and upcoming attractions and museums. Louisville is home to many free attractions, including beautiful parks. Quick strolls through these parks reveal extraordinary sculptures and landscaping. Trees glisten from Cherokee park in the Highlands area to Highview park in the suburbs.
Downtown Louisville is also a home to arts including Actors Theater of Louisville and The Brown theater both of which host Broadway shows on a regular basis. You can catch a carriage ride through the city streets at night or take a ride on the Belle of Louisville. Downtown, even though it can be confusing, is a wonderful place with art around every corner. Statues of Daniel Boone, King Louis XVI, and Thomas Jefferson line the streets, as well as modern art from museums like the 21C.
There are also many museums in Louisville, including The Speed Art Museum, The Louisville Slugger Museum, Kentucky Derby Museum, Frazier History Museum and the Science Museum (and those are just the main ones!) Most of these museums entry fees are next to nothing, and many offer hands on activities for little ones or those you are 'touchers'.
Food in Louisville is diverse and pretty much everywhere. From common restaurants to those like P.F Changs and the Old Spaghetti Factory, there is something for everyone. Another good place to find good food is 4th Street Live!. Full of every kind of restaurant, everyone can find something they want to eat, while enjoying the bustle and music that flows into the streets. When the sun goes down, 4th Street turns into the city's hotspot for parties and clubs.
Shopping is another fun thing to do in Louisville. Many shops downtown offer handmade crafts, such as Just Creations. There are also many consignment shops including Crazy Daisy and Sugar Bakers. If those aren't your style, there are three major malls in the area including Jefferson Mall, Oxmoor Mall and Mall St. Matthews.
There are many hotels to choose from including the ever popular Galt House which is right in the heart of downtown overlooking the river. The 21C is also another popular choice but is definitely more expensive. Beautiful campsites are also available if you don't mind a short ride into the city. Getting around Louisville is not hard due to our public transportation system. (Just have change ready!) Louisville is a wonderful place for an exciting weekend get away. There are plenty of activities to keep your young children busy as well as the pickiest of travelers. There is something for everyone and a place for everyone here in Louisville.
