Mason City, Iowa is where big city fun and small town charm meet. From walking around the historic down town to eating some of the best food in the Midwest, Mason City is a destination for the whole family.
The first stop to make while in town is Music Man Square. This charming museum goes back in time to 1912 where the streets of River City from the Musical “The Music Man” come to life. The museum tour also includes a visit to Meredith Wilson’s (the creator of “The Music Man”) childhood home.
While in down town, The Historic Park Inn Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a must see. If just checking out the hotel is not enough, you can also stay there while visiting Mason City.

The down town area is full of history and masonian character, but outside of down town is where year round kid friendly and family oriented attractions can be found. In the spring Band Fest is held every Memorial weekend that includes a parade down State Street and a carnival in East Park. Band Fest is a perfect time to listen to some of the best bands in Iowa and the “best band in the land” the Mason City High School Marching Band.
During the summer a trip to the Family Aquatic Center or to Big Blue (a large natural spring water pit) are great places to cool off. You can also find sports entertainment by going to a number of Mohawk baseball/softball games or to the I-35 Speedway for races held every Sunday. The winter is also a lovely time to visit. Catch a Mohawk basketball game and take the kids (or just yourselves) to East Park for some of the best sledding in the area. A can’t miss light show synchronized to music can be located at 815 16th Street NE and after a busy and tiring day, a stop at one of the numerous coffee shops can warm you right back up.
If you’re looking for recreational activities in Mason City the Lime Creek Nature Center is where you will find it. Open year-round the nature center includes many trails for biking, walking/running, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. The trails take you through untouched prairies, wetlands, and woodlands for the best look at Iowa’s natural wildlife. Camping, picnicking, and hunting/fishing can all be found at lime creek as well.
After all the sight seeing and fun you’ll have in Mason City, some food to replenish your energy is in order. The best of the best maid-rites, steak, and worldly cuisine can be found within minutes of your attractions. Some local favorites include: Northwestern Steak House Both Maria’s Kitchen and Past Time Gardens for Mexican Birdsall’s Ice Cream Pros Sandwich Shop (Maid-rites) Every appetite and craving can be satisfied by driving down Highway 18 (“The Strip”) that runs east to west through town where American, global, and many national chain restaurants can be found.
