Everyone has a favorite place to travel. That place that gives you a sense of peace and happiness. That place where you can have a good time without worrying about the stress of life. Or if you do not travel a lot, perhaps you have that special hideaway. That place that only you know about, where you go to escape the noise. Yes, I am sure you are picturing that very place even now. For me, that place is in Traverse City, Michigan. My family and relatives built and own a small cottage on Arbutus Lake. It is a small lake only a short drive from the Lake Michigan Bay, and a very special place to me. My family and relatives always stay up their together for a few days during the summer holidays, and those are the times I always look forward to. Arbutus Lake is a gorgeous place. It is calm and serene—the ideal vacation spot. Yet there is adventure and excitement packed inside as well. You can go swimming, tubing, waterskiing, boating, fishing, and more! It is the perfect place to enjoy some time with family and friends.

Another wonderful thing about Traverse City is that it is right on the Grand Traverse Bay—part of Lake Michigan. With crystal blue waters and hot sandy beaches, the Bay is a perfect summer getaway spot. Also, there is an annual air show that is held right over top of the bay. It is a grand event, luring hundreds and hundreds of onlookers. It is always a spectacular sight to watch those airplanes maneuver inches apart high in the sky.

Traverse City not only has great water and sand, it also has high quality food! First there are the cherries that the people of TC grow that gives it the title of “The Cherry Capital”. So make sure to get some fresh cherries to snack on. There are also some locally known places, such as Don’s Drive-in, which has some spectacular food. The best item on the menu, however, has got to be their infamous chocolate malts. They are so rich, that you may want to bring a friend along to split one with you! They are so very worth it! Moomer’s ice cream is another fantastic place if looking for a dessert. They sell homemade ice cream, fresh from the cow. There is even an overlook deck where you are able to see some of their cows grazing. It is a a-moo-zing treat, perfect for a hot day.

While you are in Traverse city, you may as well drive about 25 miles west to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, for it is well worth the drive. There are several giant sand dunes where you are able to run, climb, and hike over the sand. Pack a lunch along, for you may end up hiking a good ways to see the many magnificent views of sparkling Lake Michigan. There are many stunning overlooks that show off the Lake’s wondrous waves. If you are up for a real challenge, you may consider climbing up the steepest Dune in the park. The easy part is running swiftly down the steep embankment, it is a matter of skill to return to the top again. It is a work out, but the thrill is totally worth it.

Traverse City, Michigan is an amazing city and a great vacation spot for all ages. So if you and your family need a fun summer getaway, make plans to visit the Cherry Capital and be prepared for a good time!cool
