It’s not too late to plan a family spring break with friends and family of any age, on any budget! The 24-hours news cycle almost demands that we wait to see what’s happening — and where –before we make plans. So this year, take advantage of last-minute pricing to enjoy a memorable spring break.
In the news, beach getaways remain the top choice. Local road trips, camping closer to home and especially RVing are hot right now. And following the crazy winter weather across the US, there are plenty of snow towns to celebrate spring, including two East coast mountain escapes worth the drive. Plus, last minute booking deals may enable you to knock a spectacular river cruise or event trip off your bucket list.

Many families are heading to foreign locales for beach spring breaks. Mexico’s east coast paradise at Cancun is the top searched international spring break destination (especially for its all-inclusive resorts) despite recent troubles.
The unpredictable US – Israel – Iran war has threatened the global oil supply, affecting prices at gas pumps, grocery stores, as well as on flights. Our advice: Purchase spring and summer flights sooner rather than later. European airlines, which typically hedge fuel prices with large reserves, may be a cheaper option depending on your destination. Consider all vacation packages that bundle flights and hotels.
Wherever you go and for however long, invest in travel insurance — especially for multigenerational groups. A more costly Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy may provide reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if there are government-mandated airspace closures or you’re traveling regions with Level 4 travel advisories.
Here are 14 surprising spring getaways that work for all ages, researched with our extended travel family at TakingtheKids.com:

SPRING SKIING & SUNSHINE OUT WEST

Our Colorado based partners know it was a terrible snow season at most Western resorts until the February and March powder dumps. Remember spring skiing means sunshine, terrific views, and special events to your family spring break. Expect music on the mountains, après celebrations, seasonal festivals and more.
Utah’s Deer Valley is selling $100 half-day lift tickets. Sundance features night skiing that kids and teens love and the resort’s first slopeside hotel.

KIDS & TEENS CHILL FREE AT CANCUN, TULUM AND PUERTO VALLARTA ALL-INCLUSIVES

Now that the coast is clear at Mexican tourism destinations, many all-inclusive resorts are trying to lure spring break family travelers with special deals. Hilton, which manages several of these resorts, offers a limited time Kids and Teens Free Deal for adults traveling with kids 17 and under who can stay in your room and eat for free! It’s a great deal because these resorts have enough activities to wear out tweens and teens by day and entertain all ages together at night.

DIVE DEEPER, UNCOVER THE WORLD’S HIDDEN GEMS

Spring break doesn’t have to mean fighting crowds in Barcelona or elbowing through the Louvre. A growing number of Americans are going deeper into Europe this season — and spending less doing it. According to Omio’s NowNext 2025–2026 report, nearly one-fifth of American travelers are actively seeking lesser-known destinations, drawn by lower prices, fewer crowds, and more authentic experiences. Booking data shows travel to these so-called ‘secondary’ cities on Omio’s platform is up 30% year-over-year.
The trick is pairing a major air hub with a secondary gem: Fly into Spain’s capital of Madrid, as an example, then take a train to Salamanca or Segovia.
Or fly to Bari in southern Italy and take a train to the lesser-known Monopoli or Polignano a Mare in Puglia. Visit their charming centro storicos and beautiful beaches. Multi-modal booking platforms like Omio show price comparisons across all transport modes (flights, trains, buses, ferries, etc.) Because they handle booking and management in one place, in your preferred language and currency, online platforms like Omio makes secondary cities easier to reach than ever this spring.
SMALL, LOCAL ACTS THAT SUPPORT THE PLANET

Thinking globally and acting locally empowers us in mysterious ways.
April 24, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and Birch Aquarium (their public facing arm) are teaming up to throw a Climate Dance Party that brings together ocean science, climate solutions and a whole lot of joy. This party (and others) is centered on a climate movement led by Scripps alumna Ayana Elizabeth Johnson for the paperback launch of her New York Times bestselling book, “What If We Get It Right? Visions of Climate Futures.” Oprah’s Book Club proclaims: “Read this book if you want to help save the planet… [it’s a] guide to uncovering your environmentalist superpower.”
This is one of several Climate Dance Parties on Johnson’s book tour being held around the country between April 14 and May 9, 2026. Other locations include Brooklyn Botanic Garden (New York), La Brea Tar Pits and Museum (Los Angeles), Monterey Bay Aquarium (Monterey, California), American Museum of Natural History (New York) and Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and Environment (Freeport, Maine).
ROUTE 66 CENTENNIAL ROAD TRIPPING

Celebrate with the locals Saturday, May 30 to admire classic cars from around the world. They’re meeting up for the world’s biggest car parade. The rules are simple: Any driver can join the 5.5-mile parade, but cars must be model year 1996 or older to qualify as classic. This is their official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt.
Register to drive right here; for more information visit capitalofroute66.com. Arrive in Tulsa early to check out other classic cars at the pre-Cruise Tailgate and Expo on Thursday and Friday. As for your mobile soundtrack, car radios became widely available around 1930. If your old Motorola doesn’t work, design a Spotify playlist to please all tastes as you parade along.
TRAIN WITH A FIFA CHAMPION AT A TROPICAL FOOTBALL CAMP

Families competing for the sky-high-priced tickets to FIFA World Cup matches in the US might actually save money by spending their family spring vacation in the Maldives. It’s true: Michael Owen’s Soccer Camp is returning to Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort for a second year. Join an international team of children and teens as the former England striker (Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United) delivers hands-on coaching sessions on Fares Island in Baa Atoll, Maldives. Sound like a crazy Bucket List experience? Act quickly to make the Mar. 31-Apr. 3, 2026 dates, which coincide with the resort’s Easter holiday program.
Designed for ages 5 to 13, the free, four-day youth soccer camp combines daily training sessions, skills development and team challenges for guests. Beyond the pitch, younger guests can dip in and out of the AvaniKids and Teens Club or explore the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll with their families. There’s free snorkeling right off the island, plus a full menu of water sports and dive experiences. Mealtimes are part of the fun too, with Petit Bistro, the resort’s kids-only restaurant, created just for younger guests.
PLAY BALL ON FAMILY SPRING BREAKS

Whether it’s watching the games of Florida’s Grapefruit League or Arizona’s Cactus League, spring training is a tradition for many family spring breaks. In addition to sunshine, adoring fandom and great snack food, a spring training-themed break should inspire all family athletes.
However, spring is high season and hotels near the stadiums are pricey. One example is Fort Myers, home to Spring Training for The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. This Florida city partners with Kind Traveler, which donates a portion of each booking at participating hotels to a local organization that supports sustainable travel. Remember, Earth Day is coming up April 22 and this is just one of many opportunities to help the environment.
In Arizona, the Arizona Republic suggests staying in surrounding cities like Tempe, Mesa or Glendale for better rates. Look for lawn seating, since stadiums are not as cheap as they used to be. Plus, you can save by renting an RV
and camping at local parking lots on your own mini spring break road trip.
NOT THE CHEAPEST, BUT THESE ARE GREAT VALUE, KID-FRIENDLY SPRING BEACH BREAKS

Hawaii and Florida are always top family spring break beach options for East and West coast travelers.
You can enjoy a hula lesson at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, then sway your hips at Hawaii’s most popular beachfront luau. Their Waikiki Starlight Luau dinner show honors Hawaiian and Polynesian culture through live music, traditional dance, storytelling and… a dramatic fire-knife dance finale. Friday nights, watch the resort’s fireworks show on Waikiki Beach. If the kids are exhausted, go for the more relaxed Huli Huli Chicken Extravaganza, an outdoor barbecue event each Friday. Resort rates in May start at $263/N for a double room with two queens, including a $65 resort credit.
If you want more of an apartment setup, consider the contemporary Aston Waikiki Beach Tower. Their multi-bedroom condos have kitchens, washer/dryer and a private lanai. Resort amenities include a yoga room, fitness center and some cultural programs such as lei-making, fabric-dyeing and ukulele lessons!
Southern families tote toddlers to Destin along Florida’s Panhandle for its pale gold sand, warm Gulf water, and gentle surf. Take off 10% at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa if you’re Florida, Texas or Midwest residents (blue states may be eligible.) This Hilton has loyalty point offers plus poolside games, beachfront yoga, soft watersports, beach bonfires and Mommy & Me pedicures at the spa.
Another Gulf gem is located on St. Pete Beach. The Don CeSar, known as the “Pink Palace” since 1928, is a luxury resort where generations in Lilly Pulitzer swimwear have enjoyed poolside games, movie nights, and kayaking together. You can have an adult meal at the elegant Maritana while the hotel’s childcare team gets to work.

FOCUS ON WOMEN AND THEIR SUCCESSES

There’s no better time to appreciate the many women who have made America grow than March, Women’s History Month. Start by streaming “Lilly” (Netflix) with the family. Rachel Feldman’s film stars Patricia Clarkson as Lilly Ledbetter, whose fight for equal pay with male colleagues at Goodyear went to the Supreme Court. That case led to President Barack Obama signing the landmark 2009 Fair Pay Act.
Spend your family spring break at any of 13 National Parks focused on women’s history. The Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls, NY tells the story of the first Women’s Rights Convention in July, 1848 and the struggles for civil rights and equality that continue today.
The Rosie the Riveter-World War II Home Front National Historic Park in California highlights the 18 million women who worked in shipyards and factories during World War II . Although women were expected to relinquish their jobs to returning soldiers after the war, their “We Can Do It!” experience helped foster the fight for equal rights for women.
CHERRY BLOSSOMS AND SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL (250 YEARS!) CELEBRATIONS IN WASHINGTON DC

As the nation gears up for its 250th Birthday on July 4, the capital of Washington DC has launched free events, special exhibits, openings and more throughout the year. (Eileen’s Kid’s Guide to Washington, DC can help all ages explore this fun town.)
Kick off spring in a big way at the National Cherry Blossom Festival March 20-April 12.) Special festivities the planting of 250 new cherry trees, a gift from Japan. The Blossom Kite Festival (March 28) features a “Red, White and Bloom” theme this year. The U.S. Botanic Garden and its beautiful children’s garden will display the official flowers of each U.S. State and territory (from Apr. 10) in the America’s State Flowers exhibit.
At National Harbor in nearby Maryland, we got an early preview of cherry blossoms! Their 200 trees are ready to celebrate the weekend of Mar. 27-29 with the Water Lantern Festival followed by the Sunday Sakura Festival. The Westin Washington National Harbor and Gaylord National have a special Cherry Blossom Package for families staying to explore DC’s many free attractions from this base.
NOT GOING TO DC? NO WORRIES! DC’S FINEST COMING TO YOU

There has never been a place to see the Declaration of Independence and other founding documents other than Washington DC’s National Archives which has recently completed a $40 million renovation. However, to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the National Archives is bringing some of these original documents to major museums across the country.
They’re traveling on a Boeing 737 “Freedom Plane.” (Here’s the inside scoop.) The traveling exhibition visits eight American cities from March through August 2026. Here are the stops and the dates of display.
- Kansas City, Missouri: National WWI Museum and Memorial
- Atlanta, Georgia: Atlanta History Center
- Los Angeles, California: University of Southern California Fisher Museum of Art
- Houston, Texas: Houston Museum of Natural Science
- Denver, Colorado: History Colorado Center
- Miami, Florida: HistoryMiami Museum
- Dearborn, Michigan: Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation
- Seattle, Washington: Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI)
Note that none of the stops were even part of the original Thirteen Colonies. In fact, back in 1776, the land that is today Missouri was Spanish Upper Louisiana under the control of Spain. The territory was populated by French Creoles and the Illini Confederacy of Native Americans who later became Americans!
