For one of the snow-iest springs ever, enjoy snowmobiling and other winter-only pursuits in Wisconsin.
In hilly Wisconsin, a glacier-scarred region receiving more than 40″ of snowfall each year, locals are delighted that spring is fast approaching. Not to say that Wisconsin families don’t love their winter outings but…
By April, the northern part of Wisconsin has the best conditions for skiing and snowmobiling, and the state boasts more than 22,000 miles of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, including former railroad beds and county hiking paths. Snow Goer magazine recommends Decker Sno-Venture Tours (715/479-2764) of Eagle River for their high-quality, guided local tours supported by warm-up vehicles and indoor rest stops. Newbies are encouraged. The tours typically cost between $450-$3500, without snowmobile rental. And if you’ve gone to Wisconsin to snowmobile at Easter, imagine the locals who are off to Quebec, Wyoming, Maine and even Iceland with Sno-Decker’s travel tours.
When the kids get chilled, move on to the Snowmobile Racing Hall of Fame in St. Germain (715/542-4463). Carl Eliason of Sayner, Wisconsin debuted the first engine-powered snow vehicle in 1924, and he never imagined that within 80 years his idea would spawn over three million snowmobiles in North America. It’s fun to see historic sleds, racing gear, uniforms and videos from the “old days” of the sport.
And if you want to partake in other snowsports, April is the month for Granite Peak’s annual Avalanche Days festival, a two-week mountain party with more activities around the town of Wasau. Count on reduced prices, free ski lessons, family competitions for all abilities, live entertainment, dog sled rides and allegedly — pig roasts. With the mountain’s unpredictable spring weather, Granite Peak (715/845-2846) promises lots of snow.
