The Kona Village Resort is a laid-back, secluded island hideaway on the west coast of the Big Island. Resembling a quaint Polynesian village, it's one of the most peaceful getaways in all of Hawaii, thanks to the absence of phones, TVs, or radios in the rooms.
Residing in thatched-roof hales or bungalows hidden amidst 82 acres of tropical gardens, lagoons, and shoreline, guests are lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves and wake up to the singing of birds. All hales have first class furnishings, outdoor lanais, coffee makers, ceiling fans, and a mini fridge stocked with soft drinks and juices (on the house!) daily.
If lounging around the two pools or swimming and sunning on the resort's coco-palm-flanked curve of beach gets old, there are kayaks, small sailboats, snorkel trips, glass bottom boat rides, petroglyph tours, tennis, a fitness center with a masseuse, and a daily activities program. One of the first resorts to develop a children's program, it's among the best, and can be used on a drop-in basis free of charge. They accommodate children age 6-12 (younger ones welcome with a parent) with a wide range of activities that emphasize Hawaiian culture along with old-fashioned fun; kids might create flower crowns and ti leaf hula skirts for the luau show, explore tide pools, or fish in the lagoons. Teenagers have a program of their own.
Three buffet meals are included in the rates, and a special 5:30 children's dinner is followed by supervised activities until 8:30pm. The lavish, gourmet buffets have everything from oysters on the half shell or classic burgers and fries, to island specialties such as macadamia nut pancakes and tropical scallops in lime and coconut milk.
