Softball has been my favorite sport from the time I was little. My favorite team is the Arizona Wildcats. I love everything about them. I want to be just like their shortstop, Kristy Fox. On June 4th, 2007 I sat in front of the TV watching the Women’s College World Series. When the Wildcats won in the semi-finals I knew we had a chance to win it all.
The phone rang as soon as the game ended, it was my Uncle Joe. “Did you see that game! Pack your bags we’re going to Oklahoma!” I was shocked, it was 10:00 at night and we hadn’t planned this. I couldn’t even answer I was so excited, I dropped the phone and packed my bags.
He arrived at my house at about 11:00 p.m and we began our 881 mile journey. It took about 13 hours to get there and we drove straight to the stadium to make sure we knew where it was. We showed up at the park at about noon, and walked around to get to know the place. However, we realized we had no place to stay. So we got back in our car and headed down the road. We stopped at the first hotel we saw which was a Sleep Inn, that wasn’t even two miles away. Lucky for us they had an open room. We unloaded our bags and went to have lunch.
By this time it was 1:30 and the game started at 4:00. We drove through a McDonalds and headed right back to the fields. Across from the stadium was an old fire house. We had time to kill, so we dropped by. It was actually really cool. We saw old fire trucks and got to see pictures of the first fire station built in Oklahoma. It was 3:00 and time to enter the field. When I walked through those statium gates a rush went through my body. Watching the warm ups was amazing but the game was even better. We won the second game and had now split the series 1-1.
The next morning when we got up we went to the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. It was one of the saddest things I had ever seen, but it was beautiful the way it was set up. I would recommend to anyone that they go see it, and I would love to go again. From there we went back to the stadium so we could go into the Hall of Fame building. It was really neat to see all the female athletes that had been recognized. You could also read a short story about them and how they got to where they are now. Lisa Fernandez is one that sticks out in my mind, because she was once told that she could never be a successful pitcher. Now, she is one of the top 5 pitchers ever.
The final game was about to start so we headed to our seats. This game decided it all. Arizona got off to a great start and never let up. They dominated in one of the most convincing wins I had ever seen. The final was 5-0 and when they got that final out the crowd went crazy. It was a feeling I’ll never forget. Back at our hotel room we couldn’t stop talking about it. We stayed up until 2 in the morning idolizing the players. When we woke up we headed back to Arizona, and just like that, my trip was over as quickly as it started.
