The Philadelphia Science Festival is a 10-day celebration of science that takes place each April. This year’s event runs from April 18-28 and features hands-on activities, exhibitions and informal science education. All ages are welcome, but many activities and events cater to children.
Science Carnival on the Parkway
The biggest draw is the absolutely free Science Carnival on the Parkway, scheduled for Saturday, April 20 from 11-4 pm. This outdoor gathering is held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, home to many of the city’s great museums, including the perennial kid-favorite science Mecca, the Franklin Institute. One hundred exhibitors will present non-stop experiments and interactive games, plus loads of family-friendly science-themed entertainment. If your kids want to test a crime scene for forensic evidence or make liquid nitrogen ice cream, this event is where it’s happening. The festival encourages curious kids to ask questions about science and technology, so interaction is encouraged.
Science Events throughout Philadelphia
Scores of events are scheduled at venues throughout the city during the festival. On April 28 you could consider trying Hands-on Urban Farming at Bartram’s Garden or Science at the Seaport, held at the Independence Seaport Museum. To see what events are right for your family, click here.
Philadelphia is Easy to Get Around
If you’re planning to arrive by train, the Carnival on the Parkway is only a few minutes walk from the 30th Street Station. Check out Amtrak for their ongoing family special fares, or hop on a "Chinatown" style bus with the kids and let someone else do the driving.
If you decide to spend the night or weekend in Philadelphia, there are lots of terrific activities that will keep the kids smiling — just take a look at the FTF Kid Friendly Attractions in Philadelphia guide. For overnight packages and more information, go to the Visit Philly website.
