When I was younger, I was fortunate to have a father in the military. This allowed my family and myself to experience very unique parts of the United States. One unique location was Honolulu, Hawaii. Living there was hardly dull, with so many attractions waiting to be explored. Some of my favorite destinations near Honolulu are Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the Dole Plantation.
To the East of my home in Honolulu, there is a crescent-shaped bay with the most clear, blue water I have ever had the opportunity to see. The colorful reef and tropical fish permanently dazzle in the sunlight shining over Hanauma Bay. Deemed an environmental conservation location, the staff are sure to maintain the cleanliness and the aesthetically pleasing nature of this amazing travel destination. Plus, for those who enjoy learning about the types of fish, coral, and plants found at the bay; the check-in office offers teachers and educational videos that dive into details and facts about the organisms found in the bay. Hanauma Bay is always a good place to stop on a sunny day, also, it is not very far from my second favorite destination, Diamond Head Crater.
Found just east of where I was living, there is the perfect attraction for the outdoors man. Diamond Head Crater offers tourists and locals alike, a one mile hike to the 760 foot tall top. But this adventure is not run of the mill. With two sets of +70 stairs and a tunnel close to 250 foot long, the journey is quite exciting, and steep. Even more rewarding is the 360° view of the horizon. Diamond Head Crater hold the perfect activity to get the blood pumping and the sweat pouring from any interested (and physically fit) visitors. In contrast, my last favorite location, is the perfect place to cool down. The Dole plantation claims the title of most calm attraction in my personal selection.
For a full day of fruit filled fun and only half way to the North Shore of Oahu, a visit to the Dole Plantation is a memory waiting to be made. Along with serving ice cream made of fresh Dole fruit, you can complete several activities to keep the fun flowing. Hop on the Pineapple Express and see the boundless fields owned by the plantation. Perhaps even sign up for the garden tour and experience the natural beauty Oahu has to offer. However, you cannot leave until you find your way through one of the largest botanical mazes in the world. With nearly three acres of land, and plenty of secret locations to visit, one could find themselves spending more time than expected in the Dole Plantation maze. Although, no matter what you choose to do at the Dole Plantation, the trip is surely worth the drive.
I cannot claim that I have experienced all the Hawaiian islands have to offer, but out of the experiences I have had, these are my favorite. I encourage anyone to take part in the activities at any of these three locations. In addition, I would also like to promote exploring the islands on your own and finding more adventures you can pass down through stories. If you respect the plant and animal life of the islands, any activity you partake in will be wonderful.
