Hey travelers!
Today I’m going to talk to you guys about Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is my hometown and will always have my heart. Grand Rapids is full of interesting things to see and experience.
If you were on a tour with me I would make sure you came during Artprize season. Artprize is an independently organized competition where the public votes for the winner. The grand prize is $200,000. Downtown Grand Rapids is full of things to see, from beautiful paintings and sculptures to the all gold robot man who people crowd around to watch move. Artprize is a great time to see all the grand rapids has to offer. It is also a wonderful time for artists to get exposure. ArtPrize helps to make our city more diverse. Last years winner is below.
Grand Rapids has many unique restaurants all around the city. Marie Catribs is one of the nicest restaurants in town. The stuffed french toast is my favorite! The place has a beautiful atmosphere and is owned by a lovely woman who unfortunately passed away in June. The restaurant only uses fresh and local ingredients. Yesterdog is also a loved restaurant. I bring all of my friends whenever I can! They use a vintage cash register and count everything in their head. There is a sign hanging behind the counter that states “Regular hot dogs don’t exist.”
Blues on the mall is happening right now. Every Wednesday night there is a new performer and food from local vendors downtown. Oh I forgot the best part, its free! This event goes until august and is a good chance to experience great music.
Frederik Meijer gardens is also somewhere you should definitely go when visiting. The ticket prices are very reasonable for such a beautiful place. Watching the butterflies bloom has always been my favorite. I remember taking field trips there as a little one. There are over 40 types of butterflies and when they are released into a conservatory it is a beautiful sight!. This exhibition happens every year from March 1-April 30. Now I know its over now but that just gives you travelers an excuse to come back next year! Frederik Meijer Gardens also has daily story time for the little ones in your life.
Another place to take your children would be the Children’s Museum. Its a great place to learn or to just have fun! Theres a giant bubble exhibit that is so much fun! Theres even a giant tower that forms a bubble around you. It is SO adorable to watch the children play in the make believe grocery store. Talking about this is making me want to take a visit! Another museum in grand rapids is the Gerald R. Ford museum. The museum has many permanent exhibits that enable visitors to experience his life, everything from his childhood to taking over the presidency after the Watergate scandal. Tickets for both museums are also very affordable!
I hope I have given you guys some great info on my hometown! I strongly encourage you to take a trip here even if you just take a walk downtown and explore. The diverse atmosphere and different cultures will amaze and entertain you. Your trip to Grand Rapids will be one to remember.
