I open my eyes to muted light streaming from my windows. I take a peek out, and marvel at the fluffy snow covering the mountains in the distance. As I sit and stare, I am wishing that summer would come. Winter is amazing here, but the summer offers so much fun. I could go swimming in our many rivers and streams, see the multiple waterfalls, go fishing, or go rafting. There are also many trails on and off the forty-three mile Cherohala Skyway, which are good for scenic picnics, hiking, mountain biking, and even horseback riding.
After all of these activities, I could go to the Outpost Pavilion to eat pizza, or steak, or even crab. The Tellico Beach Drive-In is fast and cheap. I could even go to the local Mexican restaurant. The choices are endless. Afterward, I could go the Tellico Grains Bakery for a cookie or some other homemade pastry. The Tellico Plains Library would be the perfect place to finish of the evening.
Another day, I might go see Scott Mansion, previous home to Tellico’s greatest supporter. There is also the Charles Hall Museum and the East Tennessee Telephone Pioneers Museum. They have had many of their artifacts given to them by people from Tellico Plains. If you want to go a further distance for more history, there are also the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and Fort Loudon. In the fall, Fort Loudon has a battle reenactment. All of these places have a very important value to our community.
Summer is also the best time for motorcycles. I can already see the many motorcyclists that will take on the curves and twists of the eleven mile Tail of the Dragon, and the Cherohala Skyway. They will probably stay at one of our motorcycle campground areas. In fact, we have lots of camping, even cabin rentals for those who like more civilized surroundings when traveling.
As I wind down from my daydreaming, I’m struck hard by the realization that I love my home. The many things to do and places to go is a great recipe for happiness, and I’m happy to keep it that way.
