Plan ahead to book a top value, successful family reunion in Door County, Wisconsin — a family vacation destination that's perfect for mixed age groups.
Door County (a three-hour drive from Milwaukee or an hour from Green Bay) has become our family's favorite reunion spot. While we are all well-traveled, we have come to appreciate the beauty and diversity of Wisconsin's northern peninsula. Flanked by Green Bay to the west and Lake Michigan to the east, this county boasts both a coastal and farmland atmosphere.
Activities for All Ages & Interests
Most importantly, it offers an array of activities to satisfy all interests. In the summer, there is swimming in gentle waters for little ones, especially at Whitefish Dunes State Park, where tots can wade, and dig in a sandy expanse of beach, perfect for tiny travelers (note: due to budget constraints, there are no lifeguards on duty); biking, hiking and waters sports for teens and adults; and shopping or exploring lovely coastal or country roads by car for those less ambulatory.
While Door County is a favorite summer spot, it also is a year-round destination. Fall festivals herald the spectacular foliage, winter sports showcase Door County's state parks, and many spring events celebrate the profusion of cherry blossoms.
Additionally, Door County offers a number of unique attractions, including the most lighthouses of any county nationwide — 10! The region is also known for its Scandinavian roots; many restaurants feature weekly fish boils which roll good food and family entertainment into one.
Recreation In Summer & Winter
With a grand total of five state parks, Door County offers endless swimming, hiking, biking and cross-country skiing options. There are a number of unique natural attractions too, including Cave Point County Park where you can hear and see the waters of Lake Michigan lapping in and out of underwater caves.
This peninsula is also dotted with small off-islands which are great for a day trip by bike, car or foot.
Charming towns — particularly Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, Sister Bay and Ephraim located on the Green Bay coast — are endowed with seasonal flowers and small harbors bustling with pleasure boats. It's so picturesque that in 2009, an HGTV show called "Outdoor Rooms" filmed several segments for their show, capturing the small town beauty of the Chanticleer Guest House near Sturgeon Bay, Woodwalk Gallery near Egg Harbor and at the private gardens of Karin Overbeck in Sturgeon Bay.
With over 300 miles of shoreline, this 75-mile-long peninsula combines pristine scenery with acclaimed performing arts, renowned galleries and shops, and pampering accommodations. For those looking for something for everyone, Door County might just be the ticket.
There are many lodging options in all price ranges, and vacation rentals from companies such as RentForYourVacation.com that make it easy to find a condo to suit your needs.

Yes, recent trends suggest that Americans are regaining confidence in vacations and travel. As travel restrictions ease and vaccination rates increase, many Americans are showing a greater willingness to travel and explore destinations again. However, it’s important to stay updated on travel advisories and safety measures to ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.
Reading Fran Falkin’s insights took me back to my first trip with Whiskers, my feline companion. The chaos of ensuring he was comfortable amidst the hustle of the airport was a lesson in patience. Had I come across these invaluable tips earlier, our journey would’ve been as smooth as a calm sea.
