We love family travel insurance and won’t leave home without it. Our family has found it essential since the very first holiday spent battling storms and re-booking missed flights (at great expense).

If you’re lucky, your family may never have needed trip coverage. Now, however, we live in an era of weather challenges and other uncertainties. Flight delays and cancellations are constantly in the news. Every vacation planner should choose the best travel insurance plan because there’s too much at stake to count on good luck.
Hopefully, none of you will ever need it… But just in case, please read on.
The Top Reasons People Buy Travel Insurance For Their Family
Most families consider purchasing family travel insurance as soon as they commit to any journey. The top reason for purchasing travel insurance for families is to insure trips involving non-refundable fees.
Flight delays and medical concerns are the other top reasons. A recent survey by Business Insider found that more than one-third of insured travelers bought insurance primarily to cover airline problems. Another 29% of those surveyed bought travel insurance to protect against a medical emergency.
The majority (68%) of US respondents said they will consider a travel insurance policy for their next journey, even when traveling alone.
Read on for more info to help you sort the details.
What Family Travel Insurance Can Do for You
Once upon a time, most family vacation choices were driven by the destination and kid-friendly activities. These days, families factor extreme heat, smoke from wildfires, political turmoil and possible illness into their choices.
With the right travel insurance, you don’t need to worry about extra costs resulting from weather, safety or public health. Travel insurance protects your vacation investment because it ensures reimbursement for fees incurred by the cancellation or early termination of your planned itinerary — for most reasons.
Travel insurance for families covers several people traveling together and is the best way of protecting your large financial investment. At companies like Travelex, for example, travelers age 17 and under traveling with you are insured at no extra charge.
What’s Covered By Travel Insurance

Covered causes might include a hurricane as well as expenses resulting from a variety of unforeseen events. When events are considered “foreseen,” however, such as a named hurricane approaching your destination, or becoming sick from a known pandemic, travel insurers typically offer coverage only with a special policy.
Purchase the best family travel insurance by asking the right questions. First, review comprehensive insurance plans from an independent insurer who specializes in travel coverage.
If you are planning a cruise or guided tour with a company which offers you their own insurance, keep in mind that a self-insured cruise or tour operator may go out of business. If they fail, there’s no way to get a refund.
Cancel For Any Reason Protection For Family Travelers
Travelex protection plans provide COVID-19 coverage. It protects your trip if you, a traveling companion, family member or business partner tests positive, or if you’re diagnosed by a physician, before or during your trip. You may be eligible for benefits such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and medical evacuation. Allianz Travel Insurance also offers Epidemic Coverage Endorsement that expands benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic.
Many insurance companies also offer, for an extra fee, a “cancel for any reason” option. Some pricier “CFAR” policies cover travelers who have a work conflict, change their mind about a destination, have to cancel their trip, postpone it or have extra medical expenses. They also may cover travelers whose return date is extended involuntarily because a quarantine is established in their home or destination country.
At Allianz, their most flexible policy is known as Cancel Any Time. Other examples of “any reason” include families in which an adult is suddenly deployed to military service or loses their job. Another reason might be a trip delay because someone breaks a leg. Or, this insurance could cover a family that cancelled a vacation because of a child’s team tournament.
Recommended Family Travel Insurance Provisions
FTF’s recommended travel insurance for families packages should comprise these seven basic areas.
- Trip Cancellation Insurance (a traveler or close family member gets sick or injured, etc. and no one goes)
- Trip Interruption Insurance (covers same expenses for hotels/meals as trip cancellation; the difference is that you’re already on your trip when something happens)
- Trip Delay Insurance (significant delays due to strikes or airline delays, quarantines, natural disaster, lost or stolen travel documents or civil disorder)
- Missed Connection Insurance (some policies cover expenses incurred by missing a travel connection)
- Baggage Loss or Baggage Delay (reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen bags; your airline loses your luggage or suitcases are stolen from your hotel)
- Reimbursed Medical Expenses due to illness or accident of insured travelers (mom breaks her leg playing tennis, needs cast)
- Medical Evacuation in case of emergency (useful especially in foreign countries).
Make the Most of Travel Insurance By Buying Early
Keep in mind that travelers who purchase travel insurance at the same time they book their trip can often protect deposits and other nonrefundable expenses. The cost of a travel insurance policy is typically 5%-10% of your total trip purchase, depending on your state of residency, the number of days you travel and the ages of the participants. (Sadly, grandparents and elders cost the most.)
You can save by buying insurance early for many reasons. For example, if you purchase it as soon as you book a Caribbean resort vacation — prior to the issuance of hurricane or tropical storm warnings common in summer — your trip will be covered.
In the case of COVID-19, you should also finalize your insurance purchase prior to a possible surge in infections. Be sure to protect yourself early prior to announcements that tour operators or airlines are declaring bankruptcy. Once these become known or foreseeable events, most policies will not cover you.
In fact, for many plans, travel insurance purchased within seven days of making your travel deposit also entitles you to medical coverage of pre-existing conditions. This is a great benefit even if you’re not aware of pre-existing medical conditions in the family.
Family-Focused Travel Insurance Plans

Families often ask us to recommend travel insurance companies, and our staff has had very good experiences with these vendors: Travelex, Allianz and Travel Guard.
You can also insure your family vacation with Allianz Travel Insurance, part of a larger company which serves millions of customers around the world. Their global presence makes it ideal for international family vacations when you want a local source for reliable help and doctor referrals.
A policy like the Allianz One Trip Prime covers kids under 18 free of charge when they are traveling with a parent or grandparent. It may also cover pre-existing conditions like your husband’s bad knee. Specifically, travelers qualify for existing medical condition coverage from Allianz as long as they meet four conditions. The four conditions are: 1) Purchase insurance within 14 days of making the first trip payment or deposit. 2) Buy insurance that covers the full cost of non-refundable trips. 3) Purchaser is a US resident. 4) Purchaser is medically able to travel on the day the plan was bought.
Travelex Family Insurance Plans
Families will find that each company has its own benefits for those traveling with relatives. If you buy travel insurance from Travelex, for example, multiple children under the age of 21 traveling with you — even friends of the kids — are covered at no additional cost.
Requirements include that under-21s have to travel with a covered adult family member. Additionally, minors’ names and trip costs must be listed on the covered adult’s enrollment form, but there’s no fee for them. Travelex doesn’t have child-to-adult ratios, making it valuable for single parent families. Note that there is no time limit on coverage purchased in advance of travel, nor are there deductibles.
If kids are traveling alone on school programs or on their own, many companies sell a student travel insurance option that covers them too. These companies also provide a 24/7 Emergency Hotline. Students get answers to questions regarding lost tickets and passports, visa information, translation services and medical and legal referrals.
At Travel Guard, children age 17 and under are covered free if they are traveling with, and related to, the primary insured adult.
Quick FAQ for Family Travel Insurance Policies

Policy options vary among major carriers, as do the features they offer to protect traveling families. As Daniel Durazo of Allianz Travel Insurance notes, “No one can adjudicate a claim before it happens. It’s always best to review the policy online then call an agent if you have specific concerns about potential claims.”
Read on for FAQ and some recommended insurance companies to explore.
Q. What if I have to cancel my flight and I’ve purchased a non-refundable airline ticket?
A. Some travel companies contract with insurers for an Air Ticket Protection Plan. This covers your ticket cost in case of trip cancellation or trip interruption. You’ll see these typically inexpensive plans offered on the checkout page of most airlines or tour operators.
Many airlines have waived cancellation and change fees. However, some restricted economy class and some international tickets are not refundable, not transferable or require a change fee.
Always, before purchasing your travel package, call an insurance agent directly and ask specific “What if” questions.
Q. What about baggage and flight delays, and the hassles they cause?
A. Travel insurance companies are becoming more user-friendly all the time. For example, several companies now provide a fixed payment of $100 for covered travel delays and baggage delays. No receipts for purchases are required; all you need is proof of your covered travel delay.
Many times, the claims can filed through your cellphone via an app or easily done online. Of course, if your baggage is badly damaged or the delay is long enough to require a hotel stay, you are able to submit receipts and file a claim, as usual, for a reimbursement.
Always, before purchasing your travel package, call an insurance agent directly and ask specific “What if” questions.

I agree 100% with everything in this article! I have had some experience with planning trips to Europe with my own family and compiled a website full of helpful advice. I particularily love your point #6 about packing lightly – each trip we do to Europe (generally about 3 weeks long) is done only with carry-on luggage. (You only need to try and lug giant suitcases full of things your don't need onto trains once!) It's amazing how little you actually need, and your last point is true too – don't expect to do too much. Sitting in an Italian park with gelato is pretty nice…

That's a great creativity and fun living place for children. I think Henri Landwirth has done a real great job for children knowing the ancient time and with that enjoying the world village of fairy tales and lot more.
This is awesome, the place suits for the vacations with family. It gives more attachment and warmness with the introduction of new culture. I would love to go there with my family.

Around the beginning of August of 2011 my parents decided to take a cruise to Mexico. At first I didn't want to go because my classes that I had at high school were College level classes and I didn't want to fall behind in them. It was my senior year, and I wanted to be on top of things. I would think that I would want to go and miss days of school, but this time around I was more focused on my education than anything. I fought really hard to stay in Florida, where I originally lived, so that I could focus on my studies, sadly, I had no choice but to go with them.
Upon arrival on the cruise things were ok. Actually it was more than ok. It was something I never experienced before. It was a mixture of different emotions. When I arrived, we had to go through a metal detector for obvious reasons. I thought I was in the clear, but every time I walked through, it would beep and I would be told to go back. I was sent back at least 10 times until the people behind me started to get mad. After about the 12th time, I finally realized what prevented me from going through. It was my belt. I had to take it off, and I thought it would be no big deal, but the minute I took it off, my pants began to drop. I quickly grabbed it, but then the officers gave me back all of my items that were metal, and without thinking I let go my pants and grabbed for the items, and the expected happened. My pants dropped. Luckily I had on long boxer shorts, but what was on the boxer shorts were even more embarrassing. My boxers had Sponge bob on it. What made it worse was that the little girl behind me saw it and shouted in excitement "Sponge Bob" and ran up to me and hugged my boxers. An outburst of laughter changed the angry crowds mood. Boy, was that embarrassing. After the embarrassing moment, it relieved some tension that I had about not going on the cruise. Even I had to admit that it was pretty funny. Eventually we settled in, got comfortable and cruised right along to Mexico.
Now since I live in Florida, I thought Florida was Hot, I was wrong. The instant I stepped off the boat into the sun, I felt as if the sun it self was cooking my face. The only way to describe or even come close to explain how hot it was is to tell you how I felt. The sun was so bright that my eyes squinted so hard that eventually after the trip I got wrinkles on my forehead from squinting so hard. I never felt a heat wave so strong as to where it made me regret ever stepping off the boat. Try standing a hot sun all day with your head hurting, eyes, and forehead. Any shade that I found was heaven for me; cause walking around in the sun was hell. The sun seriously cooked my face in to look a certain way. When I came back to Florida, everyone said that I looked older and angry. I laughed because I knew exactly why it looked the way it did.

Wow amazing resort I really like it. I am planning a big family travelling, maybe it is a great help to me. I will bookmark your blog for future updates.
You're absolutely right, but for most families, these special occasion restaurants are a once in a lifetime occasion.
And foodie NY families also take advantage of the city's 2 annual Restaurant Weeks. They're usually for a month (I know it's called Week!) in Feb-Mar and in summer of 2011, it's from July 11-24. All lunches charge $24.07 and all dinners cost $35, and in the past, these 2 amazing restaurants and many others of their calibre have participated in Restaurant Week.
So, that's certainly a good time to get the kids dressed up and show them an amazing foodie night on the town. Check out : http://www.nycgo.com/restaurantweek for details. And bon appetit!
Per se and La Bernadin are two of the best restaurants in NYC, possibly the world. But dinner for 2 will cost several hundred dollars at each one. They're not within reach of most families.
Please note this 2011 update to hours and admission prices from The Eric Carle Museum:
Hours
10 am–4 pm Tuesday through Friday
10 am–5 pm Saturday
12 –5 pm Sundays
Closed on Mondays * and Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year's Day
* Open Mondays during July and August and MA school vacation weeks.
Admission Prices
Adult admission $9
Youth (under 18), Student, Teacher and Senior Admission $6
Family Admission (2 adults and 2 youth) $22.50

1 year ago we purchased a electric utility vehicle at export-mall.com for my grandson and we were totally pleased. It took a few days longer to receive and had small damage on the back. It was hard to reach them by phone, but the damage was so minor that we decided to just not complain. My grandson got great enjoyment from his pocket rocket for 2 years. Last year we sold it at our neighborhood community yard sale because he out-grew it. I have read lots of complaints but I can honestly say our experience with the company was a good one. We are going to make another purchase from the same company for this Christmas and I am hoping I'm able to post another good review of that purchase.

Americans are in love with Yellowstone this year! Available space at in-the-park lodges is at a premium and hard to find. A great alternative is Far and Away's 2 nite basecamp (you won't believe the luxury) on a remote shore of Yellowstone Lake. If you want a park experience unlike any other (without the crowds) and one that still has good space availability – it's the ticket.
Thanks for all the great budget friendly tips. My wife and I love taking a bike ride or our dogs for a walk on the Monon Trail. Stop in at BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Shop) for a tasty treat!
