What makes a great trip? Is it the food, the fun, or the local attractions? For me it is the whole experience. Getting to visit new places and learning about the area is very exciting to me, so when I learned that my fanily and I would be traveling to Corolla, NC I was thrilled. Corolla is a quiet beach on the coast of North Carolina and for animal lovers, it is the place to be because not only is it a beach, but it is home to some animals that most people have never seen, wild horses! These horses are direct descendants of Spanish mustangs and are very scarce today.
Around the island there are several companies that offer wild horse tours on the beach however they charge around 50 dollars per person. My family and I were lucky enough to see these beautiful animals everyday on the beach for free! The dunes that the horses walk on were once filled with bombs. Most of them have been removed but local officials are not sure if any remain, so they advise tourists not to walk on them. I learned to appreciate animals because while watching the horses it is tempting to move closer and snap pictures, but for their safety as well as mine, it is best to stay at least 50 feet away. A popular attraction for visitors is Timbuck 2. This is a recreation area with shops, food and various sporting such as go-carts and putt-putt golf, which kids love. While I was there I was able to sample some great local seafood at a new restaurant called Uncle Ikes, which is only one of many great restaurants.
From this trip I learned a lot. I learned to take in nature and my surroundings because it is filled with history. A place that may seem unimportant or insignificant to many can provide multiple opportunities to truly experience a local culture. Corolla offers a beach atmosphere that is quaint and seems unspoiled by commercialism.
This trip meant a lot to me. One can trulyl appreciate the history, the local flavors and the nostalgia of places like Corolla. To have the opportunity to visit new places and learn different ways of life is very important to me and I would encourage anyone who loves the beach and loves animals to take a trip to Corolla, North Carolina.
