Traveling with grandchildren is a very exciting and wonderful experience. Your February issue inspired us to go to Washington, D.C. during spring break with our 11-year-old granddaughter, Lauren. What better place to visit than our nation's capital!
Our tour started at the National Mall with all the Smithsonian Museums grouped around it. At the head of the mall is the Capitol, one of our first stops where we toured the Rotunda and other areas.
We visited most of the museums and always made a stop at the ice cream shop in the Museum of American History (202/633-1000). In addition to ice cream dishes, full meals were also available. We chose the Tourmobile, a narrated bus tour with free reboarding, to provide transportation to the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and others. The narration was very informative.
Our 4-year old grandson, with parents, joined us for part of the weekend. After viewing an exciting St. Patrick's Day parade, we again visited the Air and Space Museum (202/633-1000) which the grandchildren voted their favorite. Don't leave the museum without visiting the Langley Theatre where IMAX films are shown in continuous rotation on the five story screen.
A guided tour of the White House was the climax to a very thrilling weekend for all. Transportation on the metro was a fun experience and a station located near the St. James Suites (where we resided during our stay), made it very convenient (FTF Note: As of April, '02, St. James Suites has been converted to a dorm for Georgetown University – try its sister property, St. Gregory Luxury Hotels and suites).
These memories will always be with us and we are ready to go again (somewhere)!
