Gunflint Lodge, Minnesota - My Family Travels

In 1998, Family Travel Forum asked a dozen top travel writers to share their “favorite family resorts” with readers. Here's one of their picks.

We’re animal lovers. Gunflint Lodge (800/328-3325), located on the south shore of Gunflint Lake, adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, offers one of our favorite winter adventures: dog mushing. By day we dashed through the woods and across frozen lakes by dog sled, but at night we didn’t have to sleep in an ice yurt — we came back to our modern cabin complete with fireplace and sauna.

The guides taught us the basic rules of mushing and accompanied us on our treks. It was incredibly peaceful to be out in the woods with the dogs. We could enjoy the wilderness without the noise of snowmobiles or the work of long-distance hiking. At dusk we fed the herd of deer that came up to our cabin, and at night we went out on the ice to watch the northern lights. An added bonus: the food at the resort is really good. My daughter Alissa and her friend Eliza were both about 12 when we did this; they’ve been asking to go back ever since.
