In 1998, Family Travel Forum asked a dozen top travel writers to share their “favorite family resorts” with readers. Here's one of their picks.

My family, not much for resorts, voted this summer’s 5-day family rafting trip with ROW ( 800/451-6034) through the lower canyons of Salmon River as our favorite vacation. We camped along the river in tents, which was great. Our kids, now 7 and 12, thought the best part of the trip was running rapids in inflatable kayaks, the games and water fights, the scenery and the weather. They liked the swarm of bees on the beach at dusk the least!

My wife and I thought the best part was the quality of ROW’s staff — the service, imagination and food! We did enjoy the fun and games in the van during the three-day driveout (three days back, too), but didn’t appreciate the cheating on card games or being cooped up for six hours/day during the drive. While we were in the area, we also visited the hot springs at Thermopolis, Wyoming, the Dinosaur Quarry in Vernal, Utah and learned a lot about the local Nez Perce Indians.
