If you like Italian food, you will find plenty to like in the 50,000-square-foot food mall and eatery EATALY. Opened recently by uber chefs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich, the food emporium is crowded, busy and full of delicious food.

There are currently five restaurants, ranging from pizza to fish to standing food counters for paninis on the go, to sit-down dining. The restaurants are open for lunch and dinner.

A rooftop beer garden is meant to open in a few months.

The space is large and bright open plan. The food looks (and tastes) delicious. Fresh pasta (over 20 varieties) made daily; a butcher; fish, produce, cheese, pastries and yes, gelato are all available, as well as a wide variety of prepared sauces, oils, dried pasta.

And delicious fresh bread (I recommend the rustic walnut).

EATALY is very crowded at the moment, apparently there are lines on weekends. So if you go… a weekday morning would probably be the best idea.

If strolling around the store makes you want to go to Italy… there is a counter with various travel brochures available to assist you in your travel research. They are not a travel agency, just a counter with travel information.

The food is great, the atmosphere is bustling but fun. Kids will enjoy eating there, and there is always the gelato for dessert….

Viva Italia!

Eataly (646/398-5100) is located in Chelsea at 200 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10010.
