Mexico Trip - My Family Travels

My Family flew to Cancun, Mexico on vacation last year. Cancun is a busy city full of life. Everywhere you looked there were faces buying, selling, relaxing and experiencing all that the city had to offer.

Mega high-rise resorts stood tall over man made beaches. Still I was struck by the amount of business that was still happening. Calls to the office and texting, laptops and emails seemed as natural as the pebbles on the shore. After spending a few days in the hustle of the city we decided to rent a car and tour the countryside.

I was taken aback by the vast differences between the two worlds. It was like stepping back in time. People, old and young, sat on the side of the street watching life happen before them.

On our way to Merida I witnessed an old woman slaughter a hog on the road side while young children played with sticks. I looked at all the carefree faces that were missing from the landscape of the city and wondered if they were as content as they appeared. They didn’t seem aware of all that they didn’t have.

Their smiles were full and genuine. The trip home was quiet for me. I wondered if this trip had stirred anyone else as it had me.

I was curious if my life at home would be affected by all that I had witnessed and experienced. I now know that our way of life is a choice, that my modern day luxuries are just that luxuries and not necessities. I came to the conclusion that all of our houses and gadgets and cars and laptops and cell phones all cost us much more that the initial purchase price, they eat up our very souls.

Reading Fran Falkin’s insights took me back to my first trip with Whiskers, my feline companion. The chaos of ensuring he was comfortable amidst the hustle of the airport was a lesson in patience. Had I come across these invaluable tips earlier, our journey would’ve been as smooth as a calm sea.

I read your article on the Sheep of Sun Valley and I found it very fascinating and enjoyable. You have given a detailed and colorful account of your experience at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which celebrates the history and culture of sheepherding in Idaho. I think your article is a great way to introduce this unique and fun event to other travelers and families who are looking for a different and memorable adventure.
