Just before my senior year of high school we moved to another state. I was devastated! And to make matters worse the move was severely stressful. I felt old, tired, and needed a vacation.
Well a few months after the new year my father decided to surprise us; a vacation to Florida! I needed a vacation so desperately I would have been ecstatic if he told me we were vacationing to Timbuktu. After reserving hotel rooms, going to AAA, and much packing we were off. Now I’ve been to Florida a couple times and each time was nice, so I wasn’t expecting anything exorbitant.
I just thought I’de go to Florida and pretty much do nothing but sunbathe and eat. Imagine the shock I got when we arrived at Key West. Key West was so bewitching! The weather was positively perfect and the scenery was breath-taking! Certain streets I walked took me back to the time of Tennessee Williams, Thomas Edison, and Lou Gehrig.
I walked into Ernest Hemmingway’s home and found myself, no longer in 2007, but in another time. And when the day came to an end, as tired as I was from walking, I didn’t want to go back to the hotel. I have never been anywhere in Florida except Disney and Miami, visiting family, so Key West was a whole new world for me.
Watching the sunset, driving back to the hotel, was another experience I just can’t forget. It happens so quickly that all you have to do is look away for a few seconds and it’s almost night. The highway we drove on has ocean all around it.
The way the ocean color seems to change with the sky as the sun leaves and the beautiful soft colors that fill the sky is awesome. I’ve never been so awestruck in my life. After staying in Key West for three days we visited family I haven’t seen for in years.
They’re all so outgoing and exciting, I had the time of my life those four days. One night, as I was recalling the events of the day with a smile on my face, I realized that a vacation doesn’t always have to be fun and games and amusement parks or just lounging around your hotels pool. A vacation should be somewhere you’re stress-free and enjoy, a place you can appreciate this world God has given and made just for us.
I went to sleep very satisfied that night. After leaving my family’s home we drove to the hotel waiting for us in Disney World and had just as much fun there as in Key West and my family’s home. I’m seventeen years old and being at the Disney Resort makes me feel like a seven year old again. Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Magic Kindgom, Animal Kindgom, and Epcot, OH MY!!The drive home was bittersweet.
As much as I enjoyed this vacation I missed being at my new home in North Carolina. This vacation was one I won’t soon forget! It will always be my Florida story!
