My trip to Nigeria would definitely have to be a significant experience that has made an impact on my life. My father always wanted me to see my heritage, and has always desired to introduce me to my family. He also wanted to give me an experience that I would not be able to receive in my usual surroundings. He wanted to familiarize me with a new way of living knowing that various parts of the world can entail dissimilar living styles, environments, meals, and languages.
As a citizen of the United States, this was my first experience out of the country. My thoughts of going to this continent, at first, gave me the chills.
The media corrupted my mind as to what I would see and encounter on my trip to Africa. Because of this, I was not as excited as I could have been on my journey. But when I got there, my whole mind set about Africa made a complete three sixty turn. Our first stop was in Lagos, Nigeria, where most of my cousins resided. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by our family as if we were the only things they looked forward to seeing their entire life. I was astounded by the amount of love and kindness I felt from them.
After two days, we went on a plane to Enugu, Nigeria, which was actually our final destination. I had the opportunity of learning about the different kinds of food available in the country such asabacha, fufu, egusi soup, and pepper soup. I meet mostly all of my family. I was able to see the beautiful trees, colorful flowers, and greenery in the environment. I was also introduced to some of the various languages spoken in Nigeria such as Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa. I was acquainted with the different living conditions which included living without steady electricity, seeing market life, and driving on ditch ridden roads. I also saw the great respect, kindness, and love exhibited by the people of Africa. It was just fascinating.
I loved it, and I actually could see myself living there for a long period of time. Going to Nigeria was a big learning experience for me and had a positive impact on my life. It exposed me to a new living experience and taught me about the importance of family. It also taught me about love and appreciation. This trip will truly be a trip I will always remember.
