My trip started off as any normal, long-distance trip starts. I hopped on a plane and hoped that I would find enough entertainment to last the flight, so books are a must on those eight hour flights. I first arrived at the Frankfort airport in Germany through one of Lufthansa’s nicer planes, but Germany was not my real destination. A few hours later, after walking around the large and impressive airport, I took a short flight to Zagreb, Croatia where my father and I were greeted by some of his closest friends. We spent the night in the city at a friend’s apartment after walking around Croatia’s capital and getting some amazing ice cream and kremsnita at Vincek, a fantastic ice cream parlor that I highly suggest to everyone who visits the city.
After a weird night of trying to recover from the six hour time difference between the East Coast and Croatia, my dad and I drove all the way to a farm that was not even five kilometers away from the city of Zadar. Most of my dad’s side of the family lives on a farm in large houses that they built themselves with what I believe is concrete or a similar material. The view of the farmland is amazing from the top of the path that leads down a hill and to multiple different areas where a huge variety of crops grow.
After a day or two of being out in the fields or staying inside and reading, it was a perfect day to go to Zadar, which has a fantastic view of the Adriatic Sea. There are multiple old statues and other large artifacts such as wells and arches in the city, plus a new museum that shows a great deal about the history of the area. There are many small shops in Zadar that have interesting products and plenty of places to eat. At the end of the day, we stopped to get ice cream that was fantastic. Croatia is definitely the best place to get ice cream!
After our day in Zadar, my dad and I went to visit some friends who live right on the shore. We walked along the coastline that was covered in smooth pebbles and alluring sea glass that would look lovely on a necklace or bracelet. The water was beautiful and no other word could describe it any better! After walking up and down the shoreline, we drove about ten minutes until we were right under a gigantic aqueduct. We were even able to walk on it for a short amount of time. It was so awesome to see something historical and ancient still standing.
Afterward, we went to visit Klis Fortress, a huge castle at the top of a large hill. It was interesting to see yet another historical site in Croatia. Walking around so much can be tiring, though, so we went right into the heart of the city of Split to grab a bite to eat. There were numerous pizza and ice cream shops within the city, so of course we had to have pizza and, once again, ice cream. We came to Split around Easter time, so we were able to see a lovely display of the Last Supper at a gorgeous church with a beautiful façade.
However, all good things must to come to an end. A few days later, my dad and I were on a plane back to America. It is always nice to visit family and friends, but coming home to sleep in your own bed has its own rewards.
