I now understand why people go to New York to try to fulfill their dreams. New York just has that special “it” factor. It makes you feel like you can do anything and be anything. Like when you look up and see those huge skyscrapers touching the clouds, or watch the actors on Broadway singing their hearts out and then take a stroll on Fifth Avenue and see all the designers’ boutiques who earned a right for their store on the prestigious street. New York is beautiful in its own way. It may be a concrete jungle instead of one bursting with exotic plants but that is what makes it unique; and unique is what makes it New York.
When I discovered my grade nine band trip was going to be to New York I could hardly contain myself. Ever since I was little, I always wanted to go to New York and see a Broadway show and now these dreams would finally come true. Not only did I get to go to New York for four days without any parents but I also got to go with an amazing group of people that we would all cherish the memories together forever.
On the day of our departure we all loaded into the coach bus and headed on our ten hour bus ride to the Big Apple. It was honestly the longest ten hours of my life I have ever experienced, but when I saw the city skyline in the distance I knew it was all worth it. As soon as we arrived we were whisked off to see our first Broadway show at the Gershwin Theatre which happened to be my favourite musical Wicked. I was so emotionally moved that I got to see the performance I was waiting my whole life to see.
On day two we woke up bright and early and drove back to New York from our New Jersey Holiday In to do as many touristy things we could possibly do. We went to the Grand Central Terminal, Radio City Stage Door Tour, Juilliard, The Rockefeller Center and to top it all off, Bubba Gump Shrimp for dinner. It was a classic restaurant to visit and having seen forest Gump I was really excited to eat there. I opted for the salad in a restaurant known for shrimp which I was teased relentlessly for ordering. After dinner we went to see the Phantom of the Opera. Some of us were so exhausted we feel asleep during the performance.
Our last full day in New York would have to be my favourite. We started our day again early in the morning to pack everything we had planned in. Our first stop was the American Museum of Natural History which we took pictures with the famous characters in the movie Night at the Museum. After that we stopped for lunch and did some sightseeing. After jam packed days, all that everyone on the bus wanted to do was just go shopping and have some free time. Our amazing and wonderful teachers asked us if we wanted to go to another museum and Central Park or have five free hours downtown to do whatever we wanted. We unanimously decided to have free time so they let us loose downtown New York with five hours to take the big apple by storm.
I have left a lasting impression on New York as well as it to me. I leaned it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do but rather who you can experience it with.
