My trip to Maine was a great trip for me and the rest of the crew. You see, I went on this trip with a bunch of Boy Scouts. The trip I went on was one of the high adventure trips the Boy Scouts occasionally make. It included backpacking/hiking for 3 days and canoeing for 4 days. Within those days we climbed Mtn. Katahdin, went cliff jumping, backpacked 20miles, canoed 35miles, and engaged in other awesome activities.
The greatest part of the trip was the sight seeing. The pictures I had the opportunity to take were amazing. The views were nothing like the ones in Georgia. It was a totally different landscape going from Georgia to Maine. There were a lot of animals that we had the chance to see like the iconic bald eagle and Maine’s state animal, the moose. There was a chipmunk in one campsite and one member of the crew had the fabulous chance of touching it; he was quite thrilled to have done so! There was another time when I came back from the restroom and all of the sudden a deer, just to the right of the trail, was startled. I can not tell if I scared it more than it scared me! Another time a squirrel was eating a nut and I was able to get within a couple of yards and take a picture of it. These and other adventures are what I experienced in Maine.
One of the main reasons we traveled to Maine was to climb Mtn. Katahdin, and a great climb it was. Mtn. Katahdin is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. In the middle of summer it still had some ice on it. There are 3 ways to climb the mountain and that is Saddle, Cathedral, and Knife’s Edge; Saddle being the easiest and Knife’s Edge being the hardest. We went up Saddle, but the original plan was to go up Cathedral and return back down Saddle. The reason for that was because the ranger said that it would be unsafe to go up Cathedral. The entire time that we were at the top of the mountain we were in a cloud. The complete trip from hiking to the top and returning to the base camp was 12 hours.
Once we got onto the canoeing portion of the trip it was mid-week. This was the portion where I saw the most animals, I believe, because life is attracted to water. There were bald eagles flying around us, moose hanging out near by, and loons just being loons. There were other interesting animals I saw but those were by far the coolest. I have heard that fishing in Maine is great, but I did not get a fishing license so I could not fish. There were, I have to admit, some decent sized fish.
The entire trip was a great experience for me and other guys with me. The time we were there was in the summer, and good weather was with us. It rained one time during the day, but that felt good to all of us.
All in all we had a great trip with every one in my crew and everyone in the high adventure program. The program was very well thought out, and I am happy to say that I participated in it. The people in the program were very nice and flexible with what we wanted to do. So, I have to say, it was a trip worth doing.
