Rain, rain, go away. Come again some other day…
I. Was. Devastated. Upon entering the KOA campgrounds, my family had high hopes of enjoying a lovely, once in every two years camping trip. Who would have known the weather man had lied; High 80’s all week long. Ha, try mid 50’s! Above us, clouds began engulfing the beautiful sun, swallowing our happiness along with it. In an attempt to brighten the mood, my father put on a smile and led the way into the cabin. His attempt was short lived. Only moments later we heard the pitter patter of rain- falling slowly at first, but then quickly as if the droplets themselves were racing toward the ground. Being that our past camping trips had always contained the everlasting rays of the sun, we were clueless as to what to do next. A dark shadow had come upon our shoulders. I. Was. Devastated.
Contrary to our belief that the sun was mandatory in order to have a good time, and after a couple of hours moping about the cabin, we came to the realization that excitement and fun could be found anywhere if one searched sufficiently. Sure enough, we had a blast in the indoor pool. Long hours of playing Marco Polo and chicken cured our doubts of having a horrible trip.
Later, we discovered how to have fun right inside our own cabin. By taking pictures of the family and playing circle games such as quack-dilly-oso, the day quickly passed and time finally caught up to us. It was time for bed.
The next two days of our trip continued to be filled with bundles of enthusiasm and enjoyment. And on the very last day, a blessing from God was given; it had stopped raining. We took the opportunity to build a campfire- roasting marshmallows and cooking sausages, all the while potatoes baking in the ashes. It was a great way to end the trip.
Though started out as a terrible thing, the rain instead brought the family together. Being forced to bond, our relationship as a family grew, discovering things about each other that we never knew before. The trip made us realize that throughout all our years we never truly got to know one another. It definitely surprised us. Nevertheless, we are now closer than ever. Looking back, I thank the rain because it had done more for our family than the sun could have ever attempted.
