San Antonio is the best city in the world. It is deep in the heart of Texas, and it has all the conveniences of a large city with the laid-back feel of a small town. Everyone should visit San Antonio. You will not regret it.
As far as food goes, San Antonio has it all. For Mexican food, Mi Tierra is the best. Be sure to get some fudge or cookies on your way out. For Tex-Mex, there is no beating Alamo Cafe. I recommend the Fajita Dinner or Combination #2. The brisket tacos and chicken-fried steak are also local favorites. As far as fast-food Mexican goes, Taco Cabana or Mama Margie’s are going to be your best bets. San Antonio is a city well known for its barbecue. If you are on the river, stop by County Line for some brisket and mashed potatoes. If you are willing to venture out to Leon Springs, get some turkey and brisket at Rudy’s. Make sure to wash it down with a tall glass of sweet tea. While barbecue and Tex-Mex made San Antonio’s cuisine famous, the city boasts a host of other restaurants. Zio’s is a wonderful Italian restaurant. Also, Earl Abel’s is a delicious bakery off of Austin Highway. I recommend the eclairs or the white cake.
Many of the 26 million tourists who visit San Antonio each year come for the historical attractions. From the Alamo to the Mission Trail, visiting San Antonio is like reading a Texas History textbook. A major attraction is the riverwalk, where one can shop, eat, and relax. Personally, I love going to El Mercado. Walk through Market Square, buy some huaraches, and talk to the locals. I promise you will have a good time. If shopping is your thing, head to La Cantera or North Star Mall. If the weather is nice, there is no topping La Cantera. It is a beautiful outdoor mall with all major chain stores and some stores unique to San Antonio. North Star Mall is a better bet if it is raining, as it is indoors and also contains all major stores as well as other stores. Also, one can head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas for a fun day of riding roller-coasters and meeting Looney Tunes.
After a long day of visiting tourist attractions, head out to the hill country and hit up a dance hall. Put on your boots and start two-stepping. If dancing is not for you, head to the game of one of San Antonio’s sports teams. Every San Antonio native loves the Spurs, and a Spurs home game is the place to be. If you can get Tim Duncan’s autograph, I would be so jealous. If there isn’t a Spurs game, see if the Talons are playing at the Alamodome. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, arena football has arrived in San Antonio. If professional sports aren’t your thing, drop in on a college game. San Antonio has many colleges and universities, including the University of Texas at San Antonio. Ho roadrunners! If you happen to be in town at the same time as the rodeo, you’re in luck. The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is a ton of fun, and it attracts stars such as Dierks Bentley, the Band Perry, and Reba. No matter what your taste, you will be able to find something to entertain you in San Antonio.
